According to market analyst Gil Barabach at Safras & Mercado, there is pessimism regarding Arabica production in the market, although this may be alleviated with the increase in rainfall and the emergence of flowering. He does not rule out a positive production surprise in the future. In the case of Brazilian Robusta, expectations are more optimistic, since the weather, although far from ideal, was not so adverse for the production of the variety. So if we are in nice rainy period we dont have to be afraid about a crop, i trust to grower they will do maximum for their plants.

In a LinkedIn post, the head of coffee for a major trader appears optimistic. It looks like we are going to have a good (very good?) crop,” said Octavio Pires, head of coffee in Brazil for Chinese trader COFCO, commenting flowering in the country.

Ortiz, I think we saw very different videos and photos. These are strong flowerings with vigorous plants, surprising many agents. The market reflected the exuberant flowering with a sharp drop at the Monday opening and continued decline on Tuesday, despite the failed attempt at recovery at the start of trading..

There is no hope here. Dude from his own field sends them pictures of flowering and says he will have a better crop and they say to him that he is wrong and that he will have 30% less. Madness.

Here we have had two large blooms with hot sun and moist soil and now, in higher areas, there is a third bloom. At 1200 meters above sea level, the temperatures are more pleasant (which is why the best coffees are at higher altitudes) and the flowers are also more vibrant. What I mean by this is that the rains now have not brought good results in the first blooms and, if I were to post on social media, which of the three blooms would I post?

I also have coffee areas at 1050 meters, areas with gravel and stones, with most of the flowers now, but 5% of the buds are on the ground without opening and there is no chance of the remaining 100% becoming coffee. Brazil can indeed "surprise", perhaps it would surprise much more if the climate were good.

Mario, there is no reason to argue and 30% loss is not really needed. Last figures, that Conab provided, point to 10-12% underproduction vs expected for 2024 crop in Brazil. 10% of roughly 70mb expected, is 7mb and 10% for Brazil is not a catastrophe at all, as 10% is never catastrophe for any given farmer. The important thing is that this underproduction happened mainly on very high temps and dry spells but not a severe drought at the time. As high temps affect the tree cycles, next 2025 crop for the trees, that suffered, will be affected without any doubts and drought has added to it. The question is what's gonna be the underproduction vs expected ? On 2023 OFF crop basis, 2025 crop could be 66mb and would be reasonable for now to expect it being 60mb - nothing magic, nothing terrible, etc, but it's gonna be another 6mb, taken off the balance sheet. What would make 24+25 = 13mb on Brazil only, not counting Vietnam and CAM. All exporters/roasters understand it very clear and that's why there is record export from Brazil for current price and practically no increase in ECF stocks to previous calm :) levels.

Whatever Sucafina or Stone X or Rabo, etc feel about trees and how they may recover is not a scientific prognosis. And all big roasters/traders understand that. Now it is about USDA that will act as a final arbiter in its Nov/Dec reports. Monday/Tuesday moves do not show any kind of panic selling at all. And again, if to assume that all is just OK (not amazing) current price is sky high. Sky High. Why would exporters buy like crazy expensive coffee if all is more or less and trees will recover perfectly ? Well, if they would believe it - they would not...

Viriato Magalhães, you forgot that the EUDR anticipated imports according to the new rules that come into effect in January 2025, but now tend to be extended. In theory, the urgency for imports is over, which should be confirmed by the reduction of future Brazilian shipments, especially conilon.

Viriato@ once and for all, buy at this level does not mean they bought sky high as all hedge coffee and at the moment of fixation ....which can be in 3, 6, 12 months (rolling options) it can be very cheap ! Does anybody understands this at this forum at all ?

Re EUDR we had the talk much earlier and I pointed out back then that the rumors were that restrictions will be delayed and for a real period of time and for the reason - that was practically obvious from the beginning. Buy At This Level :) physical coffee (not futures/options) means some physical mb have been paid (on agreed terms) and then shipped and then those bags went into the warehouses, shelfs, consumers homes and just got consumed. This is not hedging - this is satisfaction of demand/future demand and protection of market share. As for the urgency of import or the explanation of the figures bigger/smaller, for sure there are always different factors, but as ECF stocks numbers have shown, nothing from amazing export went to stocks. It describes the current situation very clear. Yes, they bought sky high, if to consider current situation being normal and nothing dangerous going forward, and if the history is any guide. :)

Mario Ortiz writes as Maja, with many details about the chaos of the trees, how coincidental.
