Free hotel breakfast coffee, a long-standing hospitality staple, may soon become a luxury rather than an expectation, warns Orbis Coffee CEO Justin Clarke. With global green coffee prices reaching record highs, Clarke predicts that hoteliers will struggle to continue offering complimentary coffee without significant cost-cutting measures or a shift in sourcing strategy.

Pathetic. Since the COVID hotel chains have raised prices by at least 50%, and now suddenly the price of coffee is the big issue.

There is no free hotel breakfast coffee :). But there is a strategy that allows to include the price of coffee into the price of something else :). When the attendant of the international sales meeting gets free coffee, snacks, lunch, dinner, hotel room, etc the expense goes towards marketing budget the purpose of which is to make the attendant feeling good, to see the product/terms for the product in a most beneficial way and to place a good order. When host situation gets tougher/market gets tougher, etc, the package starts getting smaller: hotel needs to be paid partly or in full, lunch becomes snacks, etc, etc. :):):) All this is a function of the current business situation and perfectly normal. :)

The biggest issue for the real big players right now is to evaluate with a minimal mistake what's gonna come next and for how long it's gonna last :). That's a real tough task, assuming all the peaces of the puzzle.

Management bet on the wrong market scenario, sold coffee it didn't have and now can't physically fulfill the contracts. That is to say, he acted appropriately like Comrade Ro from our forum, he played it short, only now instead of writing not very smart posts, the board has put the company into bankruptcy.

For Viriato Magalhaes. Coffee-growing techniques have improved significantly since 2010, particularly in adapting to climate change. 1. Climate-Resilient Coffee Varieties. Researchers have developed drought-resistant and heat-tolerant coffee varieties, such as new Arabica hybrids and improved Robusta strains. Crossbreeding traditional Arabica with more resilient species like Coffea stenophylla is becoming more common. 2. Shade-Grown and Agroforestry Practices. This helps: Regulate temperature fluctuations. Improve soil moisture retention. Protect crops from extreme heat and heavy rainfall. 3. Soil and Water Management Improvements. Mulching and cover crops are now widely used to retain soil moisture and prevent erosion. Drip irrigation systems and water conservation techniques help farms survive prolonged droughts. Some regions use biochar to improve water retention and carbon sequestration. 4. Disease and Pest Management. Rising temperatures have increased threats like coffee leaf rust and the coffee berry borer pest. Farmers now use biological pest control methods and fungus-resistant coffee strains. Some regions integrate genome-editing techniques to develop disease-resistant coffee plants. Conclusion: Compared to 2010, today’s coffee farming is much more adaptable to climate change. While challenges remain, the combination of genetic advancements, sustainable farming techniques, and precision technology has significantly improved coffee’s resilience to extreme weather.

Thank you ! I'm pleased that you dedicated this to me personally. As a really informative answer would get a lot of space, I'll be as short as I can :):):): 1) You need to know of which cultivars Brazilian coffee park consists, percentage wise, in relation to very modern clones, etc; 2) Brazilian production and most productive farms are sun grown - no shade, pictures from internet will help. You can't protect 200k farm (50ha, 100ha, 200ha, etc from extreme heat and heavy rainfall :):):); 3) Drip irrigation I know by heart as I built/used for 100ha :):):). Drip irrigation like any irrigation is based on the source which may be the river, lake, reservoir, created by you and filled with the springs and rain. When drought hits, guess what happens next and guess what local authorities do with water intake, etc. Irrigation is not applicable to any area/landscape, check what percentage of A farms in Brazil is irrigated. In most cases irrigation is not enough, rain is still needed for good productivity; 4) Check what is the percentage of super resistant cultivars in Brazil and read about their behavior, etc. There are always fungus and some pests, the idea is to keep it under control. Study how this task is handled in Brazil and what role rain plays in applying the product, etc. When the index gets out of range the handling changes completely and this is what most likely is ahead for Brazil :). Now, what you really need to know: 1) Just a green alive tree producing some beans and great production are completely different animals. There is no talk about Brazil staying without coffee trees; 2) High temps effect on the yield is very well studied as for coffee as for other plants. Research what is On Leaf temperature and the relation between air temperature and on leaf temperature. Irrigation helps to mitigate high temps effect to some extent but does not protect from it and does not negate the consequences; 3) High density farms are highly depended on the input, relation is not linear, when some factor goes out of range, yield suffers. Conclusion: while talking about Brazil you have to be specific and understand what exactly are you talking about. Brazil is most advanced coffee lab in the world and most industrial producer with the biggest scientific base behind. But the tree still remains the tree and depends on the weather... :):):) You have to understand the difference between production and great production.

SeattleHusky. On a very personal basis I would also suggest you to research what is Grand Minima Cycle is, how often it happens, how it was affecting different aspects of life within previous cases, agriculture including, etc. FYI we're in the very beginning of this cycle and it should peak around 2040 and to end around 2053. Then you would understand that real fun did not started yet... :):):)

You are comparing today's coffee price trend with 2010's. You suppose current coffee price trend would duplicate what happened in 2010. Unfortunately it's not gonna happen. You have no idea how coffee growers of the entire world including Brazil have applied the new technology which was developed after 2010. The entire coffee growing industry would be significantly impacted even with only 10% of the farmers that applied these technology. The reality is this percentage is much higher than 10%. So your idea that today's coffee price will duplicate what happened in 2010 will never happen cause your assumption is statistically wrong.

You got it all completely wrong. You need to check the definitions :). Your assumptions about Brazil are based on general information and theoretical evaluations while they should be based on specific information that currently applies to Brazil. Look at Indonesia and many other origins, average yield wise, and explain yourself why it is so low if it is that easy to implement all you said. You also need to understand on what your projections are based. There are technicals and fundamentals. Fundamentals are based on tree characteristics, landscape/micro climates, management and weather patterns ( on science in other words:)), weather patterns are recorded by the weather stations daily and on that information long term charts can be built, etc, there is always some station, closest to municipality in question, that can provide exact information about a given day. After what it is a matter of if and to what extent you trust science. Technicals are based on probability what means on previous outcomes, which outcomes have developed on same/similar conditions. Here long term charts will provide you the most applicable information. Duplication has nothing to do with it and what you need to compare first is the behavior of the indicator(s) and then the behavior of price in relation to the behavior of the indicator. :):):) Chart wise you compare market reaction to the cause(s) and it doesn't matter if it was 2010 or 1997 :):):)...

If you meant Slow Stochastic indicator in particular, you need to know that this cyclical indicator shows you, in a simple form, the deviation from norm and for how long this deviation typically lasts. :) If you will build a monthly chart and will apply this indicator, you will see very clear, on historical basis, when the risk to go short (not intraday but position wise) is the ... smallest. Of course, if you trust your eyes :).
