one more thing real quick... (reason I believe a major top is in place).....i've been trading for many years and when ever a market makes a major top....its always ends with super hyper volatility and occurs with limit up limit down limit up limit down days.....which makes it hard to hold position......kinda of like the bull trying to buck everyone off  one last time before dying....

Destin Richter    I held off  today but any higher open on Monday I will be a seller again....I just hope there isn't any negative news over the weekend .  Heavy odds that a top has been made and this 50 point rally from lows this week has knocked out a ton of shorts...

Serg Castro I concur the top is in though I’m no lumber/fundamental expert.  Rising interest rates, building season halfway done, high unresolved tariffs that can only improve possibly over time, record high pricing...can’t ask for more madness short of a major asteroid hit and the price now captures all of this info.  As H said way back, this bull market is done and over time the price will head in the downward direction.  Barron’s had an excellent article on a potential 50% drop from the highs, worth reading.  Get short, defend the positions if you have to, and be patient.  I’m sure we'll all be chatting when front-month lumber is in the 400's and lower....

Destin Richter  That's why I don't like to get involved in the fundamentals....The chart tells you everything you need to know.........and this chart is telling me a major (multi decade ) top is probably in place.   you don't get too many opportunities like this.... . and yes if we are able to ride this down (not gona be easy) cuz there will be big spikes like this week....we will have a lot to talk about....Have a good weekend buddy!!!

dont get me wrong I agree that long term we should head south but in the next weeks i think we are gonna revisit 600's. A bearish position is banking on the removal of tariffs which i think at the moment is not likely as we are heading into a full blown global trade war. The fair value with tariffs is like i said earlier around 550 give or take. My short term bull position is based on the rollover of specs closing their shorts heading into the next contract and the convergence of spot and future prices.

If a lumber deal is reached between US and Canada, the price will drop in a heartbeat, so be careful out there for you bulls.  I'm only going to sell into any sharp rises in Sept or beyond, staying away from the long side for now.  I believe the top is in and though we may have wild days to come, the long term trend will be downward over the next couple years.  Just my gut feeling.

I agree......it may not happen but......if it does , you will see an immediate 2 dollar move down from these levels.......there is no way I'm holding a long position with that slight possibility.....many trading accounts would be wiped out....you never know with Trump....he is always changing his mind....

Not much change on speculator positioning since last week (-3% long side), Looks like a support is forming at these levels which are arguably the fair value of lumber at this point. The price level before tariffs (450) + tariffs (20-23%) equals 540/550 levels. I closed all my positions with a temptation to go long next week after Tuesday.

The chart is starting to drive me nuts.  It's starting to use previous resistance closes as supports (see the pink dashed line).  Also, I would not be surprised to see it extended limit up back to the ascending blue support dashed line, which happens to be exactly $25 from the 566.30 close...591.30.  I will be reshorting from that mark, constituting a retest.

Limit down a full 25 - what a fantastic ride this has been.  I'm existing 2 more shorts.  Now, the question is, will we see some violent moves shortly to the upside (tomorrow or next week)?  Isn't the cash price still relatively way up there?  Fed's raising of rates will put a damper on new potential new home/equity loans and yet the new home-building is going bonkers (thousands going up in Sparks/Reno area, plenty in Colorado as well).

If we head down a full 25 ticks on Thursday, I will thin out a couple more short positions to lock in profits, letting the rest ride wherever we head over the next few months.  Again, no new shorts until we have some crazy upward movement in Sept or beyond.  Thanks for keeping us apprised on cash prices and other clues.

About 40  (which is a lot of volume) July call options (near the money) which expire in 2 weeks ...traded today...Usually only a handful of calls or puts are traded a day.

We would be all rich if we knew :) I want to see COT numbers tomorrow to have an idea how speculators are positioned. My guess would be that we will see another bearish print but sooner or later (approaching contract end) we should see convergence between spot and futures and i think its gonna go up with specs closing their shorts.
