The Dow extended its run of record closes on Wednesday, its longest streak in 30years. This happened despite FOMC minutes that clearly show the Fed is ready to pull the trigger on a hike at any moment. I don't care if i am missing out on the party right now. The risk in going long here far outweighs the potential reward. And so i will stick to my favorite position at the moment -- cash. an investor's greatest tool is patience. it is difficult to sit by and watch the Dow climb higher every day. But the party won't.last much longer. Tread carefully if you are invested on the long side.

Hey TM....I was lucky enough to have been able to retire early. I have learned from my mentor's to invest, rather than trade. I have been long since March of 2009....Understandably, I was lucky. I was going thru a divorce in 2008, and our midtown condo was ****in the divorse litigation. Lucky for me, prime NYC real estate didn't take a huge hit during that time... Long story short...I got total possession of the condo and it had quadrupled in value. Received my check from the closing on 02/28/2009, and put it all into a Vanguard S and P tracking mutual fund. I have kept it all there and reinvested the dividends.... Investing is for the long haul, not for a few months here and there....

I lost quite some money during that period, trying to trade when I'm not ready. Looking back, I'm glad I traded that period, went through the psychology challenges, otherwise I won't realize my own shortcoming and seek for help on trading psychology.

Oh I understand investing, as that is what I did everyday for 10 years, until this coming Friday. I managed $450MM for a local jurisdiction. My former boss is a MBA, CFA , CAIA. He taught me only two things matter: Correlations and Volatility. Manage those and things go smoothly. Fortunately I am vested in two defined benefit plans and a healthy 457 plans, so most of my money is in RE. Properties did decline slightly in the DC area, but not much. They are starting to stagnate now and my wife who is an agent feels they are a bit overpriced. I made a lot of money in volatility in January 2016 after seeing what it could do in August 2015. I'm just waiting for the next opportunity to make more to supplement my db plans. Until then I am trying to stay disciplined in my short volatility funds, but when the longs get going its way more fun. My boss has tried to get me into options, but I have a hard enough time hitting the sell button (instead of the buy button.)

@Teck - The biggest psychology issue I have faced was back in 2008-09 when everything was falling apart and there was no where to run. When all correlations ran to 1 it felt like the world was ending. However, the silver lining was that starting in 2009 almost everything was a good buy. I picked up a bunch of MO at around $14 and have watched it grow. I feel we are in the opposite situation now, as everything seems overpriced. I am a CPA by training, so I rely heavily on fundamentals and trailing PEs are horrendous. Too many zombie companies that need to be cleansed.

Investing is part of the plan too, making money work for you is a great feeling, but there's just nothing worth investing yet. Trending up is easy to buy, trending down should be easy to sell too, but I just wouldn't know how will my psychology work before I'm in that situation, looking forward to those period :) sideways is tough, need to be really selective and take only high probability trades
