Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Utilities sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.40%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.33%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 5.61% or 6.27 points to trade at 118.11 at the close. Meanwhile, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 1.41% or 0.52 points to end at 37.49 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.32% or 1.53 points to 117.51 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which fell 6.49% or 8.15 points to trade at 117.37 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 2.11% or 1.15 points to end at 53.43 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was down 0.51% or 0.40 points to 78.27.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which rose 7.67% to 26.81, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was up 6.75% to settle at 35.60 and Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which gained 6.61% to close at 20.65.
The worst performers were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) which was down 6.49% to 117.37 in late trade, Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which lost 5.79% to settle at 73.33 and Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF) which was down 5.05% to 27.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Dragon Victory International Ltd (NASDAQ:LYL) which rose 47.64% to 3.750, Cleveland BioLabs Inc (NASDAQ:CBLI) which was up 46.08% to settle at 3.1700 and Acorda Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACOR) which gained 39.42% to close at 0.962.
The worst performers were Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was down 42.00% to 0.0754 in late trade, Kaixin Auto Holdings (NASDAQ:KXIN) which lost 41.72% to settle at 4.750 and Baudax Bio Inc (NASDAQ:BXRX) which was down 40.15% to 1.58 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2090 to 939 and 106 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1486 rose and 1377 declined, while 78 ended unchanged.
Shares in Dragon Victory International Ltd (NASDAQ:LYL) rose to 52-week highs; up 47.64% or 1.210 to 3.750. Shares in Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) fell to all time lows; down 42.00% or 0.0546 to 0.0754. Shares in Kaixin Auto Holdings (NASDAQ:KXIN) fell to 52-week highs; down 41.72% or 3.400 to 4.750. Shares in Baudax Bio Inc (NASDAQ:BXRX) fell to all time lows; down 40.15% or 1.06 to 1.58.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.58% to 29.35.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.13% or 2.40 to $1909.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.34% or 0.14 to hit $41.20 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $42.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1824, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 105.48.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 93.100.
