U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.27%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.27% to hit a new 6-months low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.43%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 6.29% or 4.72 points to trade at 79.72 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 0.86% or 0.63 points to end at 74.21 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.74% or 0.80 points to 109.35 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which fell 2.12% or 1.54 points to trade at 71.25 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 1.91% or 1.04 points to end at 53.43 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) was down 1.69% or 1.44 points to 83.75.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which rose 12.37% to 22.98, American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) which was up 6.29% to settle at 79.72 and Coach Inc (NYSE:COH) which gained 4.78% to close at 33.07.

The worst performers were CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which was down 7.98% to 13.15 in late trade, Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which lost 7.66% to settle at 4.82 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which was down 6.44% to 58.94 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aquinox Pha (NASDAQ:AQXP) which rose 482.12% to 10.42, Career Education Corporation (NASDAQ:CECO) which was up 29.23% to settle at 4.20 and Stampscom Inc (NASDAQ:STMP) which gained 27.74% to close at 84.40.

The worst performers were ANADIGICS Inc (NASDAQ:ANAD) which was down 58.75% to 0.235 in late trade, Hansen Medical Inc (NASDAQ:HNSN) which lost 40.36% to settle at 0.501 and Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ:CENX) which was down 36.98% to 5.18 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1484 to 976 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1560 fell and 1015 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged.

Shares in CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.98% or 1.14 to 13.15. Shares in Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) fell to 52-week lows; falling 7.66% or 0.40 to 4.82. Shares in EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) fell to 52-week lows; down 1.91% or 1.04 to 53.43. Shares in Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) fell to 3-years lows; losing 1.69% or 1.44 to 83.75. Shares in ANADIGICS Inc (NASDAQ:ANAD) fell to all time lows; falling 58.75% or 0.335 to 0.235. Shares in Hansen Medical Inc (NASDAQ:HNSN) fell to all time lows; falling 40.36% or 0.339 to 0.501. Shares in Stampscom Inc (NASDAQ:STMP) rose to 5-year highs; up 27.74% or 18.33 to 84.40. Shares in Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ:CENX) fell to 5-year lows; losing 36.98% or 3.04 to 5.18.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.76% to 13.39.

Gold for December delivery was up 0.23% or 2.50 to $1092.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.87% or 0.83 to hit $43.83 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.93% or 0.95 to trade at $48.56 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.33% to 1.0959, while USD/JPY fell 0.40% to 124.23.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.19% at 97.69.
