Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas sectors led shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.53%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.11%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 2.11% or 0.83 points to trade at 40.25 at the close. Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 2.09% or 1.67 points to end at 81.72 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) was up 1.87% or 2.63 points to 143.15 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which fell 1.50% or 0.90 points to trade at 59.10 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.20% or 1.46 points to end at 120.70 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was down 0.79% or 0.53 points to 66.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 9.98% to 11.46, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 7.19% to settle at 111.35 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which gained 5.43% to close at 15.73.
The worst performers were Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was down 6.08% to 22.41 in late trade, CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which lost 3.83% to settle at 20.58 and Cigna Corporation (NYSE:CI) which was down 3.52% to 154.43 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Depomed Inc (NASDAQ:DEPO) which rose 38.66% to 28.62, Prima BioMed Ltd (NASDAQ:PBMD) which was up 35.95% to settle at 1.620 and Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which gained 32.67% to close at 2.68.
The worst performers were EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) which was down 33.57% to 0.382 in late trade, Wowo Ltd (NASDAQ:WOWO) which lost 24.11% to settle at 6.17 and Baozun Inc (NASDAQ:BZUN) which was down 21.26% to 7.52 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1852 to 1247 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1619 fell and 1167 advanced, while 7 ended unchanged.
Shares in CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) fell to 5-year lows; down 3.83% or 0.82 to 20.58. Shares in EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) fell to 52-week lows; down 1.50% or 0.90 to 59.10. Shares in Depomed Inc (NASDAQ:DEPO) rose to all time highs; up 38.66% or 7.98 to 28.62. Shares in EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) fell to all time lows; down 33.57% or 0.193 to 0.382. Shares in Wowo Ltd (NASDAQ:WOWO) fell to all time lows; down 24.11% or 1.96 to 6.17. Shares in Baozun Inc (NASDAQ:BZUN) fell to all time lows; losing 21.26% or 2.03 to 7.52.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.41% to 16.09.
Gold for August delivery was down 0.93% or 10.90 to $1155.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.30% or 0.16 to hit $53.17 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.29% or 0.17 to trade at $57.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.43% to 1.1008, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 122.59.
The US Dollar Index was unchanged 0.00% at 96.89.
