Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.18%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which rose 1.84% or 1.61 points to trade at 88.91 at the close. Meanwhile, Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.74% or 1.89 points to end at 110.56 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.29% or 3.46 points to 271.35 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which fell 2.44% or 1.84 points to trade at 73.74 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.12% or 2.81 points to end at 247.69 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 0.91% or 0.44 points to 47.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which rose 16.16% to 83.37, eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) which was up 13.85% to settle at 46.20 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which gained 6.88% to close at 103.90.
The worst performers were Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which was down 8.04% to 70.12 in late trade, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which lost 7.15% to settle at 79.22 and United Parcel Service Inc (NYSE:UPS) which was down 6.31% to 119.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were QuinStreet Inc (NASDAQ:QNST) which rose 38.05% to 12.880, Affimed NV (NASDAQ:AFMD) which was up 35.19% to settle at 1.825 and Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which gained 32.15% to close at 0.372.
The worst performers were Proteostasis Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTI) which was down 23.87% to 3.52 in late trade, NIC Inc (NASDAQ:EGOV) which lost 20.18% to settle at 13.25 and Electro Scientific Industries Inc (NASDAQ:ESIO) which was down 19.20% to 18.92 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1737 to 1404 and 37 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1275 rose and 1256 declined, while 89 ended unchanged.
Shares in Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) rose to 52-week highs; up 16.16% or 11.60 to 83.37. Shares in eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) rose to all time highs; rising 13.85% or 5.62 to 46.20. Shares in QuinStreet Inc (NASDAQ:QNST) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 38.05% or 3.550 to 12.880. Shares in NIC Inc (NASDAQ:EGOV) fell to 5-year lows; falling 20.18% or 3.35 to 13.25.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.14% to 12.98.
Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.66% or 8.80 to $1351.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.87% or 1.21 to hit $65.94 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.28% or 0.88 to trade at $69.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.85% to 1.2518, while USD/JPY rose 0.16% to 109.37.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.58% at 88.43.
