U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.96%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Financials, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.96%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.15%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 3.36% or 5.27 points to trade at 162.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.00% or 1.42 points to end at 143.94 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 0.33% or 1.53 points to 462.52 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 3.52% or 7.93 points to trade at 217.08 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 3.10% or 7.10 points to end at 221.66 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was down 2.88% or 4.78 points to 161.39.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which rose 6.05% to 163.36, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 6.04% to settle at 64.95 and Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CTXS) which gained 3.66% to close at 104.70.

The worst performers were Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which was down 7.92% to 22.45 in late trade, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) which lost 7.75% to settle at 57.37 and State Street Corp (NYSE:STT) which was down 7.06% to 93.88 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Zogenix Inc (NASDAQ:ZGNX) which rose 65.73% to 25.92, G Medical Innovations Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:GMVD) which was up 45.37% to settle at 6.12 and Valneva SE ADR (NASDAQ:VALN) which gained 45.01% to close at 47.52.

The worst performers were Cardiff Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CRDF) which was down 25.90% to 4.550 in late trade, OncoCyte Corp (NASDAQ:OCX) which lost 24.20% to settle at 1.660 and Petros Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PTPI) which was down 21.12% to 1.830 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2229 to 1017 and 141 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2614 fell and 1221 advanced, while 190 ended unchanged.

Shares in Zogenix Inc (NASDAQ:ZGNX) rose to 52-week highs; rising 65.73% or 10.28 to 25.92. Shares in Cardiff Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CRDF) fell to 52-week lows; falling 25.90% or 1.590 to 4.550. Shares in G Medical Innovations Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:GMVD) rose to all time highs; gaining 45.37% or 1.91 to 6.12. Shares in OncoCyte Corp (NASDAQ:OCX) fell to 52-week lows; losing 24.20% or 0.530 to 1.660.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 24.28% to 23.85 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.56% or 28.30 to $1840.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.22% or 0.19 to hit $85.02 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.10 to trade at $87.76 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1345, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 114.33.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 95.585.
