Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.14%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.52% or 1.62 points to trade at 108.54 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.95% or 0.94 points to end at 100.10 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) was up 0.92% or 1.39 points to 152.32 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which fell 1.63% or 1.30 points to trade at 78.33 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.17% or 0.95 points to end at 80.54 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was down 1.05% or 1.34 points to 126.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Juniper Networks Inc (NYSE:JNPR) which rose 3.17% to 23.42, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which was up 3.15% to settle at 176.00 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which gained 2.93% to close at 56.27.
The worst performers were Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which was down 2.96% to 44.52 in late trade, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which lost 2.82% to settle at 77.40 and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was down 2.54% to 35.73 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were PostRock Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:PSTR) which rose 139.01% to 4.350, Sysorex Gbl (NASDAQ:SYRX) which was up 52.89% to settle at 1.85 and Magellan Petroleum Corporation (NASDAQ:MPET) which gained 39.64% to close at 0.475.
The worst performers were Cellular Bi (NASDAQ:CBMG) which was down 21.73% to 25.22 in late trade, Ocular Therapeutix Inc (NASDAQ:OCUL) which lost 18.93% to settle at 31.05 and Motricity (NASDAQ:VLTC) which was down 14.22% to 3.800 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1800 to 1007; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1471 fell and 1309 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.07% to 14.73.
Gold for June delivery was down 0.75% or 9.20 to $1209.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 3.48% or 1.81 to hit $53.95 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.70% or 0.99 to trade at $59.11 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.07% to 1.0805, while USD/JPY rose 0.68% to 120.35.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.04% at 98.22.
