Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.35% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.33%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.44% or 1.18 points to trade at 49.49 at the close. Meanwhile, Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 2.20% or 2.82 points to end at 131.04 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) was up 1.69% or 2.49 points to 149.51 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which fell 2.18% or 1.78 points to trade at 79.91 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.93% or 2.22 points to end at 112.78 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was down 0.95% or 0.59 points to 61.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which rose 8.16% to 88.68, VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was up 4.95% to settle at 58.04 and Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which gained 4.95% to close at 39.01.
The worst performers were Patterson Companies Inc (NASDAQ:PDCO) which was down 16.73% to 39.56 in late trade, Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) which lost 8.70% to settle at 73.57 and Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 5.82% to 27.36 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Skyline Medical Inc (NASDAQ:SKLN) which rose 127.88% to 4.7400, EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) which was up 95.34% to settle at 0.0881 and SemiLEDS Corporation (NASDAQ:LEDS) which gained 35.37% to close at 5.0900.
The worst performers were DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which was down 31.65% to 6.22 in late trade, Amedica Corp (NASDAQ:AMDA) which lost 30.00% to settle at 0.735 and Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was down 29.29% to 3.5000 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2167 to 1002 and 86 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1520 rose and 942 declined, while 161 ended unchanged.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.40% to 12.37 a new 1-month low.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.19% or 2.25 to $1212.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.66% or 0.32 to hit $47.92 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.33% or 0.16 to trade at $49.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.04% to 1.0627, while USD/JPY rose 0.20% to 111.06.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 101.09.
