Investing.com – India stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Metals, Oil & Gas and Public Sector Undertakings sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 0.18%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index lost 0.19%.
The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were NTPC Limited (NS:NTPC), which rose 3.08% or 5.25 points to trade at 175.90 at the close. Meanwhile, Asian Paints Ltd. (NS:ASPN) added 2.48% or 23.20 points to end at 958.45 and Hero MotoCorp Limited (NS:HROM) was up 1.95% or 60.25 points to 3152.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Reliance Industries Ltd (NS:RELI), which fell 3.37% or 36.25 points to trade at 1040.00 at the close. Coal India Limited (NS:COAL) declined 2.06% or 6.45 points to end at 307.35 and Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (NS:APSE) was down 1.91% or 5.75 points to 294.90.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were NTPC Limited (BO:NTPC) which rose 3.08% to 175.65, Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which was up 2.72% to settle at 960.15 and AXIS Bank Ltd. (BO:AXBK) which gained 1.98% to close at 486.35.
The worst performers were Reliance Industries Ltd (BO:RELI) which was down 3.31% to 1041.30 in late trade, Coal India Limited (BO:COAL) which lost 2.14% to settle at 307.00 and Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (BO:ONGC) which was down 1.74% to 194.90 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 771 to 706 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1340 rose and 1338 declined, while 168 ended unchanged.

The India Vix, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 2.17% to 15.3925.
Gold for February delivery was up 1.68% or 20.05 to $1216.25 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.45% or 0.76 to hit $53.13 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.27% or 0.71 to trade at $56.57 a barrel.
USD/INR was down 0.16% to 67.996, while EUR/INR rose 0.42% to 72.5136.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.64% at 100.88.
