India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.01%

Investing.com – India stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Power, Public Sector Undertakings and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 declined 1.01%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 1.03%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Divi's Laboratories Ltd. (NS:DIVI), which rose 4.99% or 167.20 points to trade at 3,518.75 at the close. Meanwhile, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd. (NS:APLH) added 3.69% or 169.55 points to end at 4,766.20 and Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) was up 3.38% or 36.85 points to 1,128.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Adani Enterprises Ltd (NS:ADEL), which fell 6.32% or 263.35 points to trade at 3,901.95 at the close. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (NS:APSE) declined 3.01% or 26.60 points to end at 857.65 and UltraTech Cement Ltd (NS:ULTC) was down 2.40% or 170.00 points to 6,928.00.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) which rose 1.67% to 1,005.55, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BO:REDY) which was up 1.03% to settle at 4,415.00 and HCL Technologies Ltd (BO:HCLT) which gained 1.01% to close at 1,040.20.

The worst performers were IndusInd Bank Ltd. (BO:INBK) which was down 2.28% to 1,201.80 in late trade, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which lost 2.04% to settle at 8,348.30 and UltraTech Cement Ltd (BO:ULTC) which was down 1.96% to 6,950.95 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1653 to 263 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2673 fell and 748 advanced, while 110 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 12.94% to 15.56 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.16% or 2.90 to $1,822.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.93% or 0.71 to hit $76.94 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.05% or 0.84 to trade at $80.83 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.23% to 82.79, while EUR/INR rose 0.19% to 87.89.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 103.76.
