Investing.com -- U.S. employers unexpectedly increased hiring in May, although wage growth eased, in one of the final data points that Federal Reserve officials will have available as they mull over their next rate decision later this month.

According to data from the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, the world's largest economy added 339,000 jobs last month, climbing from an upwardly revised reading of 294,000 in April. Economists had seen the figure at 180,000.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate rose to 3.7% from 3.4% in April and average hourly earnings grew by 0.3% after advancing 0.4% month-on-month. On an annual basis, wage growth cooled slightly to 4.3%.

Fed officials are paying particularly close attention to these figures ahead of their upcoming two-day gathering starting on June 13. Debate still remains over whether the U.S. central bank will skip an increase in borrowing costs or continue on an over-year-old policy tightening campaign aimed at corralling elevated inflation.

Softening the labor market has been a central pillar of these now ten consecutive rate hikes. In theory, a cooling in labor demand may contribute to a slowdown in price growth via a weakening in wage pressures.

The probability that the Fed will hike rates by a quarter percentage point ticked up marginally after the jobs report, but investors still widely expect the bank to opt for a pause, CME Group's FedWatch Tool showed.

Analysts at ING said the skip scenario remains the "most likely" outcome, but noted that a hotter-than-anticipated May consumer price index print "could make it a very close call."

Another story made up to fit the market narrative not the data.
payroll increased.. unemployment also increased contradictory
Not really. Household report says 310k jobs were lost in the month so thats why unemployment rate went up.
also more people are trying to enter the work force
More lies and propaganda from the left
get help maganut
it's only lies when it's a Democratic President, not Republican.
I remember when The Orange Messiah insisted that the real unemployment rate was 42% in 2016.....
Contrary to the news using the Establishment Survey, the Household Survey showed a decrease in Jobs for May, both Seasonally Adjusted and Not Seasonally Adjusted.  This is getting disturbing!
Household survey employment is subject to much greater sampling error than payroll survey employment, due to its smaller sample size.
Unemployment up and jobs are up the same time? Interseting
people quit and got replaced. kids getting that summer work also
all just drama
it didn't
And they’re all seniors and teenagers. Womp womp.
many are undocumented i.e. illegal immigrants.
Interesting. What is your source for this?
the voices in their heads told them
Yet again, fake job reports they’ll revise this one down to, but then nobody cares
They just revised the last one UP, so your conspiratorial paranoia is not keeping up with reality.
"but then nobody cares"  -- you seem to care enough to comment on it?
Can someone explain to me how we keep creating more jobs above expectations but the unemployment rate increaes? Some of these data readings make no sense.
If that's what you think, then in your case, they are correct.
thanks that makes sense. But wouldn't a good majority of those you've described be reflected in the participation rate?
Good question, and I have no certain answer other than to observe that the participation rate is gleaned for the Household Survey, which has a smaller sample size than the payroll survey and is thus, less precise.
McDonald's is hiring.......
you sure about that? transportation? try again. not what I'm seeing up here in the northeast
nor warehousing
Oh, well if you're not seeing it in Hoboken, it must not be happening. Geez.
all the jobs created have been given to illegals and minorities. the white race is a dinosaur and will be extinct
Mexicans are white people aren't they? Spaniards are for sure. And Spanish is a European language. So the good news for you is that Mexicans (White People) won't be going extinct.
"the white race is a dinosaur and will be extinct"  -- yes, you should immediately go to a bunker and never come out again, it's your duty to preserve your race
not the white race but hopefully your racist kind will become extinct.
markets keep rallying because the data means nothing to the fed at this point
they will pause . Banks and the treasury will do the rest of the tightening from here
Biden = inflation machine. rate hike coming
"rate hike coming"  -- pay attention, rate hikes have been happening for a while now
it seems most businesses have adjusted to the higher rates the no landing scenario appears likely.
record increase in bankruptcies every week - up and up - thousands of businesses are collapsing every month - what are you talking about?
then who is hiring all these people? businesses right.
Biden = jobs machine.
Biden = old job machine that fall time to time
Your comment falled.
Rates should increase to fight inflation.
Labor market is thumbing their noses at current rates. If fed pauses its only to “apeaze” the STOCK market
Waiting on Brad Albright's "Biden = Jobs Machine" mantra to show up here.
Happy to oblige. No denying reality.
