Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Financials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.24%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which rose 2.41% or 1.64 points to trade at 69.67 at the close. Meanwhile, Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.30% or 1.21 points to end at 53.88 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 1.86% or 0.69 points to 37.74 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which fell 1.59% or 1.95 points to trade at 120.34 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.21% or 4.47 points to end at 366.44 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was down 1.17% or 0.72 points to 60.62.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which rose 10.13% to 17.17, The Charles Schwab Corporation (NYSE:SCHW) which was up 7.33% to settle at 48.03 and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which gained 3.81% to close at 22.77.

The worst performers were E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) which was down 9.33% to 41.58 in late trade, KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which lost 6.96% to settle at 161.59 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 5.38% to 56.44 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wah Fu Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:WAFU) which rose 118.25% to 2.75, ContraVir Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:HEPA) which was up 38.37% to settle at 3.3900 and Seneca Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SNCA) which gained 29.87% to close at 1.0000.

The worst performers were Onconova Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONTX) which was down 45.71% to 0.1638 in late trade, Genius Brands International Inc (NASDAQ:GNUS) which lost 38.75% to settle at 0.3430 and InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which was down 27.63% to 0.17 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1669 to 1149 and 113 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1488 fell and 1146 advanced, while 87 ended unchanged.

Shares in The Charles Schwab Corporation (NYSE:SCHW) rose to 52-week highs; rising 7.33% or 3.28 to 48.03. Shares in Onconova Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONTX) fell to all time lows; down 45.71% or 0.1379 to 0.1638. Shares in Genius Brands International Inc (NASDAQ:GNUS) fell to all time lows; falling 38.75% or 0.2170 to 0.3430. Shares in InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) fell to all time lows; down 27.63% or 0.06 to 0.17.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.74% to 13.13.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.66% or 9.75 to $1464.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.33% or 1.33 to hit $58.34 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 2.02% or 1.26 to trade at $63.66 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1060, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 108.59.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 97.890.
