Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.56%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.70%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.01%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.15% or 1.19 points to trade at 56.47 at the close. Meanwhile, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.58% or 3.89 points to end at 250.51 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.43% or 0.59 points to 41.96 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 0.90% or 1.88 points to trade at 206.69 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 0.83% or 4.07 points to end at 485.99 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was down 0.77% or 0.48 points to 62.13.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which rose 8.18% to 12.56, Nucor Corp (NYSE:NUE) which was up 7.15% to settle at 151.16 and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which gained 5.54% to close at 45.75.
The worst performers were DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 6.26% to 14.83 in late trade, Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which lost 6.20% to settle at 194.45 and The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 5.02% to 44.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Biora Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BIOR) which rose 155.92% to 5.40, Sotera Health Co (NASDAQ:SHC) which was up 99.65% to settle at 17.25 and DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which gained 59.22% to close at 0.57.
The worst performers were Bioatla Inc (NASDAQ:BCAB) which was down 46.24% to 4.15 in late trade, BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which lost 44.95% to settle at 0.38 and Idera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IDRA) which was down 29.34% to 0.46 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2203 to 853 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2645 rose and 1052 declined, while 144 ended unchanged.
Shares in Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) rose to all time highs; gaining 1.58% or 3.89 to 250.51. Shares in BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) fell to all time lows; falling 44.95% or 0.31 to 0.38.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.33% to 20.58.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.19% or 3.60 to $1,881.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.29% or 0.22 to hit $74.85 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.16% or 0.13 to trade at $79.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.27% to 132.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 103.01.
