Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.47% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.75%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.89%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 1.77% or 1.22 points to trade at 70.06 at the close. Meanwhile, Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.52% or 1.67 points to end at 111.73 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 1.49% or 2.39 points to 162.78 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which fell 0.86% or 1.48 points to trade at 171.48 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.62% or 0.61 points to end at 97.63 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was down 0.43% or 0.52 points to 119.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) which rose 8.94% to 47.18, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was up 6.99% to settle at 6.355 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which gained 6.97% to close at 36.39.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 14.50% to 57.59 in late trade, Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which lost 5.36% to settle at 148.55 and Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was down 2.59% to 68.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Opexa Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OPXA) which rose 119.40% to 1.470, RXI Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:RXII) which was up 60.62% to settle at 2.5700 and China Natural Resources Inc (NASDAQ:CHNR) which gained 53.19% to close at 3.6000.
The worst performers were DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which was down 22.95% to 9.10 in late trade, Xtl Biophar (NASDAQ:XTLB) which lost 19.44% to settle at 0.652 and Sino-Global Shipping America Ltd (NASDAQ:SINO) which was down 18.96% to 3.8900 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2314 to 857 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1378 rose and 1093 declined, while 168 ended unchanged.
Shares in Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) fell to 52-week lows; falling 2.59% or 1.83 to 68.78.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.12% to 12.32 a new 1-month low.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.39% or 4.70 to $1213.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 4.06% or 1.88 to hit $48.24 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 4.44% or 2.08 to trade at $48.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.38% to 1.0629, while USD/JPY fell 0.14% to 110.75.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.47% at 100.93.
