Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Industrials and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.82%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Linamar Corporation (TO:LNR), which rose 7.63% or 4.98 points to trade at 70.25 at the close. Meanwhile, Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) added 7.44% or 2.18 points to end at 31.50 and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) was up 6.06% or 0.04 points to 0.70 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which fell 6.57% or 0.58 points to trade at 8.25 at the close. Dominion Diamond Corp (TO:DDC) declined 4.62% or 0.68 points to end at 14.04 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) was down 4.01% or 0.23 points to 5.50.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 674 to 667 and 173 ended unchanged.
Shares in MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) fell to all time lows; down 6.57% or 0.58 to 8.25. Shares in Dominion Diamond Corp (TO:DDC) fell to 52-week lows; falling 4.62% or 0.68 to 14.04. Shares in Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) fell to 5-year lows; losing 4.01% or 0.23 to 5.50.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.90% to 23.76.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.33% or 3.70 to $1104.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.57% or 0.69 to hit $44.69 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.22% or 0.58 to trade at $47.93 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7552, while CAD/EUR rose 0.53% to 0.6699.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.40% at 95.76.
