(Reuters) - Ukrainian troops were set to withdraw from the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk after weeks of intense bombardments and street fighting, the regional governor said on Friday.

The day marks four months since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent forces across the border into Ukraine, sparking the biggest conflict in Europe since World War Two.

FIGHTING

* Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai said Ukrainian forces will have to leave Sievierodonetsk. Troops had already received the order to move to new positions, he added.

* Russian forces are seeking to surround eastern Ukraine's embattled Lysychansk, the sister city of Sievierodonetsk, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry said.

* Russia is trying but has been unable to target Western weapons flowing into Ukraine, including longer-range systems that Kyiv hopes will be decisive on the battlefield, a senior U.S. defense official said on Friday.

* Reuters was unable to independently verify the situation on the ground.

NUCLEAR WORRIES

* The U.N. nuclear watchdog is increasingly concerned about the welfare of Ukrainian staff at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Europe's largest, it said on Friday, adding that it must go there as soon as possible.

ECONOMY AND DIPLOMACY

* EU leaders on Friday warned that "cheap energy is gone" and agreed to boost preparations for further cuts in Russian gas, accusing Moscow of "weaponising" energy via a supply squeeze which Germany warned could partly shut its industry.

* Italy's dependence on Russia for imported gas has decreased to 25% from 40% last year, Prime Minister Mario Draghi said on Friday following a summit of EU leaders where inflation and rising energy prices were a key issue.

* The lawyer defending one of two Britons sentenced to death in a Russian-backed breakaway territory of Ukraine said on Friday that they had not yet submitted an appeal because they seemed to be holding out for intervention from London.

* Poland and the Baltic states want to see a stronger NATO defensive presence in the Suwalki Gap, the stretch of land that separates the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad from Belarus, the Polish prime minister said on Friday.

QUOTES

* "Russia has stolen our peace," Zelenskiy told the crowds at Glastonbury, the world's largest green field festival.

"Remaining in positions smashed to pieces over many months just for the sake of staying there does not make sense," Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai said of the situation in Sievierodonetsk.

Russian mothers, your media is not telling you truth. Ukraine is not run by Nazis. That is something Putin fabricated to hide his real motives: an old man's fever for what he thinks will make him great before he dies. 15,000 of your sons have died in the streets of Ukraine so far. Another 45,000 have been injured. For what? To serve an old man's folly.

Western media is manipulating people. Notice how they never mention that America backed the coup in 2014 that overthrew Ukraine's democracy? They don't tell you that Ukraine is shelling Russian civilians and has been for years. They don't tell you that Zelenski has banned all opposition parties to keep this conflict going. The more people who die the more money Ukraine gets from Western governments (i.e your tax money). This is an American proxy war that is making you poorer to the benefit of the MIC and the corrupt elites who profit from America's constant state of war.

Do not assume we in the west are as manipulated as you Russians. We are fully aware that the Ukrainian Supreme Court ruled that the 2004 presidential election was fraudulent.

Ukraine have not been shelling russian civilians. Putin started a riot in eastern ukraine and creates a false republic not recognized anywhere in the world on ukraine territory with the plan to make fake referendum and steal land. Offcourse kiev was infected with traitors who had no problem with Ukraine being a part of russia

Dear Russians make no mistake to think that US or Europe will let Russia win anything. We will stand by Ukraine forever because they have reminded us what true freedom and democracy is. The right to decide one own fate and not be dictated by a tyrant who decides what you can say and live. Putin cares nothing for russian people only himself and i magalomanic ideas of russia from the past it like saying that germany own all of europe because adolf invaded other peoples countries.

Jeff Gordon in your dreams. Russia has an economy the size of Italy and Russia is op against europe, uk and US do the math who can afford most weapons in the long game. You might win something in the beginning but when the war is over russia will have lost all territories they have stolen from ukraine, moldova, georgia etc.

Ukraine needs long range artillery and lots of ammunition just give them 10.000 of them not necessary with nuclear weapons.

I think it’s time the west stops shying away from this nonsensical war. It’s time to force a regime change in Russia. Lets start by giving Ukraine nuclear weapons. Enough to ********up Russia. This will rebalance the situation of strength. Lets then bomb all Russians out of Ukrainian territory. Then start investigating all the war crimes Russia is committing and use that evidence to prosecute Putin. This is the only way this madness will stop. We all say the west is united. Not enough if you ask me. The west is weak. All talk, no action.

Western news is so biased. Always ignoring the Ukrainian shelling of Russian speaking civilians. This is like Iraq 2.0, the media are yet again helping to provoke and prolong conflicts.
