Investing.com – U.K. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Life Insurance/Assurance, Food & Drug Retailers and Banking sectors led shares higher.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 added 1.39%.
The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO), which rose 6.81% or 10.9000 points to trade at 171.0000 at the close. Meanwhile, Old Mutual PLC (LON:OML) added 5.86% or 9.80 points to end at 177.10 and Legal & General Group PLC (LON:LGEN) was up 5.11% or 11.500 points to 236.500 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES), which fell 3.34% or 36.00 points to trade at 1041.00 at the close. Randgold Resources Ltd (LON:RRS) declined 3.21% or 195.00 points to end at 5885.00 and Weir Group PLC (LON:WEIR) was down 1.59% or 20.00 points to 1234.00.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the London Stock Exchange by 1363 to 642 and 470 ended unchanged.
Gold for June delivery was down 1.74% or 21.75 to $1229.75 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.96% or 0.46 to hit $48.54 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.48% or 0.23 to trade at $48.58 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.95% to 1.4621, while EUR/GBP fell 1.63% to 0.7621.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.39% at 95.60.
