Investing.com -- Nasdaq is planning to extend trading on its U.S. stock market to nearly 23 hours a day, five days a week, as it seeks to meet rising global demand for U.S. equities.

The exchange said the expanded schedule would add a new overnight trading session from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET to its existing extended-hours sessions.

The proposed schedule would allow trading from 9 p.m. on Sunday through 8 p.m. on Friday, with a one-hour pause between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET each day for processing and transition to the next trading date. Nasdaq’s regular session from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET would remain unchanged and continue to set the prices used to drive transparency across the market.

The new overnight session is currently expected to begin on Dec. 6, 2026, although the launch remains subject to Securities and Exchange Commission approval and readiness of the securities information processor. Nasdaq’s existing trading hours from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET will otherwise see no substantive changes.

The expansion would require market participants to obtain new ports for order entry during the 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. session. Several order types, including market orders and various opening and closing orders, would not be available overnight. Any orders entered during the overnight session that remain outstanding at 4 a.m. would be cancelled and could be re-entered when the next session begins.

Nasdaq also plans additional safeguards for overnight trading, including static price bands that would reject orders outside specified limits, subject to regulatory approval. Trading activity during the new session would be distributed through a separate market-data feed, while new Nasdaq Plus products would provide broader coverage across the expanded trading day.

The expanded schedule would apply to the Nasdaq Stock Market, while Nasdaq Texas, PSX and Nasdaq’s options exchanges would continue operating on their existing schedules.
