Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Mining, Energy and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.79%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Open Text Corporation (TO:OTC), which rose 9.99% or 5.95 points to trade at 65.51 at the close. Meanwhile, IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) added 7.87% or 0.21 points to end at 2.88 and Intact Financial Corporation (TO:IFC) was up 6.56% or 5.15 points to 83.61 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Athabasca Oil Corp (TO:ATH), which fell 12.95% or 0.18 points to trade at 1.21 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) declined 11.25% or 0.37 points to end at 2.92 and MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) was down 10.79% or 0.48 points to 3.97.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 657 to 534 and 331 ended unchanged.
Shares in MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) fell to all time lows; falling 10.79% or 0.48 to 3.97.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.44% to 30.84.
Gold for April delivery was down 0.12% or 1.40 to $1197.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.31% or 0.65 to hit $27.30 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.83% or 0.56 to trade at $30.88 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.40% to 0.7183, while CAD/EUR fell 0.38% to 0.6364.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.20% at 95.86.
