Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Mining and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.09%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which rose 3.56% or 0.09 points to trade at 2.62 at the close. Meanwhile, ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TO:ATA) added 3.14% or 0.47 points to end at 15.45 and Avigilon Corp (TO:AVO) was up 2.38% or 0.42 points to 18.04 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE), which fell 3.17% or 0.12 points to trade at 3.67 at the close. RMP Energy Inc. (TO:RMP) declined 2.40% or 0.080 points to end at 3.250 and Centerra Gold Inc. (TO:CG) was down 2.37% or 0.18 points to 7.41.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 768 to 554 and 196 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.49% to 12.79.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.21% or 2.50 to $1207.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.13% or 0.08 to hit $59.80 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.77% or 0.51 to trade at $65.88 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.27% to 0.8121, while CAD/EUR rose 0.04% to 0.7398.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.22% at 96.46.
