Investing.com – Australia stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials, A-REITs and Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 2.72%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Pacific Brands Ltd (ASX:PBG), which rose 15.58% or 0.060 points to trade at 0.445 at the close. Meanwhile, Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) added 11.01% or 0.180 points to end at 1.815 and Transfield Services Ltd (ASX:TSE) was up 10.70% or 0.100 points to 1.035 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC), which fell 8.37% or 0.090 points to trade at 0.985 at the close. Drillsearch Energy Ltd (ASX:DLS) declined 5.47% or 0.035 points to end at 0.605 and Senex Energy Ltd (ASX:SXY) was down 4.00% or 0.005 points to 0.120.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Australia Stock Exchange by 553 to 521 and 148 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 47.53% to 31.185 a new 3-years high.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.34% or 3.90 to $1149.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.24% or 0.47 to hit $38.72 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.93% or 0.40 to trade at $43.09 a barrel.
AUD/USD was up 0.31% to 0.7178, while AUD/JPY rose 0.83% to 85.45.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.26% at 93.62.
