Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) will stop paying developers to create applications for Alexa.

The move means the company has shelved a crucial element in its efforts to develop a thriving app store for its voice-activated digital assistant.

Bloomberg stated that Amazon recently announced that the Alexa Developer Rewards Program, which rewarded developers of popular Alexa apps with monthly payments, will come to an end at the end of June.

The company also reportedly said in a notice on its website that it's ending its program of free credits for Alexa developers to use Amazon Web Services.

However, even though they will lose the direct payments, Bloomberg said that developers will still be able to monetize their efforts with in-app purchases.
