The company markets its products to supermarket chains; wholesale distributors; the foodservice industry, including fast food, restaurant and hotel chains, hospitals, and other institutional customers; export markets; and other further processors. Smithfield Foods, Inc. sells its products through salespersons and independent commission brokers. The company has a strategic partnership agreement with JD.com and Henan Shuanghui Investment and Development Co., Ltd. It also has a research partnership with the University of Virginia School of Engineering & Applied Science to explore and advance regenerative medicine technologies leveraging porcine bio-products. The company was founded in 1936 and is headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia. As of September 26, 2013, Smithfield Foods, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of Shuanghui International Holdings Limited.
