Terp As I suspected, it only took a bit of not-terrible news to trigger the tidal wave of short covering. Will be interesting to see the CoT report next Friday, see where positioning stands.

Ganesh Chowdary My cost basis is 854 on the current position. I took profit twice at 902 on the two prior swings there since June, but will definitely close 1/3 of my current position at 854-860, sell covered calls on the rest, set a stop, call it a year in the grains.

If Trump cares about farmers, he will tweet out that he's "thinking about" and "asking my advisors about" how to do something about concentrated short selling by speculators in Soybeans and Corn. That tweet alone would be a Godsend for farmers going into harvest, while costing the government nothing.

DanteValerian taking mid term into account, soybeans long is not bad idea, sooner or later we will hear good news from Trump. thought about adding an other long at 815 but thought i would do little down. that's ok, am still in good profits with soybeans. gl

Average basis isnt that low everywhere, especially closer to the river. i have some guys that sold some crop prior to all this tariff talk.... but with a good crop and extra bushels to sell they will average out ok... some farmers never sell until at harvest or after and theres fewer of those guys out there every year

Terp Locking in 1/2 to 2/3 of a crop's price at planting is a smart strategy if that price is near the top of the 52-week range (which it was at the time). Just takes a lot of the stress out of the equation, allows one to focus on the product in the ground.

While beans may indeed be dormant until the trade picture brightens, the COT picture suggests that the MM guys are very short (~3rd percentile in position) and the commercials are indeed very long  (~90+ pctl). This is counted over the past 8 years. So, if, as and when the trade picture brightens, the short covering triggers, the rally is going to have quite a bit of velocity. Just my opinion.

Futures positioning is more lopsided than I've ever seen it, in percentage open interest terms. However that hasn't mattered much lately, since shorts haven't been truly squeezed by price.

Beans have been in a sideways correction for over 3 years.  Next move should be another leg down to the 625 area.  Basis levels will be the highest ever this harvest, already at $1.20 will probably approach 1.35

Needs to go up way more than that if it wants to break this grinding pattern of lower highs. I'm guessing we're at a seasonal bottom, but I've been off the past 3 weeks, so being more defensive on rallies.

Based on CoT data, i cant see how any more speculative positions go on the short side. Downward pressure must be coming from commercial sellers due to an abundant harvest. I guess some light will be shed on this tomorrow with the USDA data release.

826 1/4 is Nov contract low..Given how oversold beans are on the weekly chart (single digit on stochastic indicator) I think we can see a nice rally but not before making a new contract low
