Investing.com -- Shutterfly Inc (NASDAQ:SFLY) named Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) U.K. chief Chris North as its President and Chief Executive Officer on Thursday in a move that will be effective on May 31.

Shutterfly, one of the world's top manufacturers and digital retailer of high quality personalized products, had been without a permanent chief executive since last month after the resignation of Jeffrey Housenbold. Since Mr. Housenbold's departure, Phil Marineau has assumed the role in an interim capacity.

"We are very excited to welcome Chris to the Shutterflyteam. His outstanding track record at one of the most successful eCommerce companies in the world makes him an incredible asset to this organization," Marineau said in a statement. "Our Board and management team are committed to extending Shutterfly's market-leading position and we are thrilled to have Chris lead the team in this endeavor as we continue to delight our customers, drive stronger operating results and increase shareholder value. We believe this is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Shutterfly."

North became CEO of Amazon's U.K. division in January, 2011, succeeding Brian McBride who left the post to undergo prostate cancer treatment. Previously, North served as Amazon's head of its U.K. media business. North also spent time in a senior leadership role with HarperCollins Publishers and as a media and entertainment consultant at Booz Allen & Hamilton.

"I'm delighted to be joining Shutterfly, a company I have long admired. Our family have been happy customers for more than a decade," North said in a statement. "With Shutterfly's dedication to customers, incredible team and track record of innovation, I believe the company is strongly positioned to grow and increase profitability in order to drive shareholder value."

Shares in Shutterfly lost 0.27 or 0.57% to 46.81 in after-hours trading.
