EU Shares close the day in green

European shares closed Monday’s trading session higher for the second day amid speculation leaders of the Euro area will maximize efforts to tackle the nation’s escalating debt crisis and prevent debt-laden Greece from defaulting on its debt and risk of contagion from getting worse.

The benchmark index for Europe, the STOXX 600 ended higher by 1.89% to 220.28, and STOXX 50 ended up by 2.14% at 2094.08.

The Benchmark indexes performed as following:

CAC 40 Index

The French index climbed 49.23 points or 1.75% to finally close at 2859.34. The index started the session at 2754.82 and recorded throughout the day its highest level at 2916.75 and its lowest level at 2753.27.

Best performing stocks within the index were the Sanofi share which inclined 2.35% to settle at €48.10, in second place came the AXA SA share which closed higher by 8.18% at €8.98 and in the third place came the GDF Suez share which inclined 4.16% to settle at €21.02.

The worst performing shares in terms of subtracted value for the index were led by the LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA share as it plummeted 1.60% to end at €104.85, following is the EADS NV share as it shed 1.60% to settle at €20.35, while coming in third is the Bouygues SA share which slumped 1.97% to close at €24.41.

DAX Index

German equities advanced today as the benchmark index DAX 30 closed the session higher by 149.00 points or 2.87% at 5345.56. The index started the session at 5128.56 and recorded throughout the day its highest level at 5415.56 and its lowest level at 5118.19. 

Best performing stocks within the index were the Allianz SE share which inclined 10.15% to settle at €65.01, in second place came the Deutsche Bank AG share which closed higher by 8.65% at €25.12 and in the third place came the Commerzbank AG share which inclined 7.76% to settle at €1.76.

The worst performing shares in terms of subtracted value for the index were led by the BMW AG share as it plummeted 2.64% to end at €101.55, following is the Volkswagen AG share as it shed 2.17% to settle at €101.55, while coming in third is the ThyssenKrupp AG share which slumped 1.67% to close at €18.57.

FTSE 100 Index

The British benchmark index ended the day higher to settle at 5089.37 with a gain of 22.56 points or 0.45%. The index started the session at 5066.81 and recorded throughout the day its highest level at 5148.81 and its lowest level at 5974.03.

Best performing stocks within the index were the Barclays PLC share which inclined 6.85% to settle at £156.00, in second place came the GlaxoSmithKline PLC share which closed higher by 1.53% at £1329.50 and in the third place came the Diageo PLC share which inclined 1.73% to settle at £1235.00.

The worst performing shares in terms of subtracted value for the index were led by the Royal Dutch Shell PLC share as it plummeted 1.46% to end at £1959.50, following is the BG Group PLC share as it shed 1.59% to settle at £1144.00, while coming in third is the BHP Billiton PLC share which slumped 0.82% to close at £1747.00.
