Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Staples and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.04%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Paramount Resources Ltd . (TO:POU), which rose 12.64% or 1.58 points to trade at 14.08 at the close. Meanwhile, Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU) added 12.59% or 0.86 points to end at 7.69 and Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF) was up 12.21% or 0.21 points to 1.93 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI), which fell 5.60% or 0.19 points to trade at 3.20 at the close. B2Gold Corp . (TO:BTO) declined 4.94% or 0.080 points to end at 1.540 and Tahoe Resources Inc (TO:THO) was down 4.84% or 0.56 points to 11.00.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 739 to 633 and 148 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.58% to 24.41.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.03% or 0.30 to $1134.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 6.30% or 2.85 to hit $48.07 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 5.76% or 2.88 to trade at $52.94 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.63% to 0.7622, while CAD/EUR rose 0.40% to 0.6799.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.19% at 95.96.
