Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.40% to hit a new 1-month high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NexGen Energy Ltd. (TO:NXE), which rose 8.27% or 0.210 points to trade at 2.750 at the close. Meanwhile, Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 7.50% or 0.09 points to end at 1.29 and Russel Metals Inc . (TO:RUS) was up 5.84% or 1.69 points to 30.64 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TO:MFI), which fell 5.72% or 1.74 points to trade at 28.66 at the close. Cineplex Inc . (TO:CGX) declined 4.56% or 1.34 points to end at 28.05 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was down 4.20% or 0.62 points to 14.14.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 694 to 404 and 128 ended unchanged.
Shares in Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TO:MFI) fell to 52-week lows; losing 5.72% or 1.74 to 28.66. Shares in Cineplex Inc. (TO:CGX) fell to 5-year lows; down 4.56% or 1.34 to 28.05.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.42% to 14.35.
Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.08% or 1.10 to $1305.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.70% or 0.47 to hit $67.72 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $73.12 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.7763, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.6500.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 92.62.
