Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Discretionary, IT and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.39% to hit a new 3-months high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CES Energy Solutions Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 8.50% or 0.390 points to trade at 4.980 at the close. Meanwhile, Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) added 5.63% or 0.22 points to end at 4.13 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI) was up 3.75% or 0.27 points to 7.47 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which fell 6.15% or 0.040 points to trade at 0.610 at the close. TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TO:RNW) declined 5.77% or 0.76 points to end at 12.42 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN) was down 5.18% or 0.160 points to 2.930.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 606 to 490 and 126 ended unchanged.
Shares in ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) fell to 3-years lows; losing 6.15% or 0.040 to 0.610.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.33% to 12.56.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.35% or 4.60 to $1305.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.51% or 0.34 to hit $66.98 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.03% or 0.79 to trade at $75.95 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.88% to 0.7634, while CAD/EUR rose 0.90% to 0.6591.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.37% at 94.84.
