Devils C Hischier signs seven-year, $50.75 million extension

The New Jersey Devils signed 20-year center Nico Hischier to a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension on Friday.

The first overall selection of the 2017 draft was pleased with the deal that runs through the 2026-27 season.

"I like the direction the organization is going in and the confidence they give me is all a player can ask for," Hischier said on the team website. "We have a young, exciting team, and I am driven to try my best to help the team succeed every day. I was really welcomed here from day one, and I have always felt that I wanted to be part of the Devils."

The financial terms of Hischier's deal break down this way: 2020-21: $7,000,000; 2021-22: $7,250,000; 2022-23: $4,500,000; 2023-24: $7,750,000; 2024-25: $7,750,000; 2025-26: $8,000,000; and 2026-27: $8,500,000.

The Swiss-born Hischier has 101 points (37 goals, 64 assists) in 157 career NHL games. He has two assists in six games this season.

He broke into the NHL with a strong rookie campaign in 2017-18 as he scored 20 goals and had 52 points. Last season, he had 17 goals and 47 points.

"Nico is a special person who possesses a team-first mentality combined with an inner drive to succeed," Devils general manager Ray Shero said. "The entire organization is thankful to him and his family for believing in our future. We are excited that he will continue to play a prominent role with us for many years to come."
