(Reuters) -Two men died after a Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) vehicle, which was believed to be operating without anyone in the driver's seat, crashed into a tree on Saturday night north of Houston, authorities said.

“There was no one in the driver’s seat," Sgt. Cinthya Umanzor of the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 said.

The 2019 Tesla Model S was traveling at a high rate of speed, when it failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway, crashing to a tree and bursting into flames, local television station KHOU-TV said.

After the fire was extinguished, authorities located 2 occupants in the vehicle, with one in the front passenger seat while the other was in the back seat of the Tesla, the report said, citing Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman.

Tesla and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The accident comes amid growing scrutiny over Tesla's semi-automated driving system following recent accidents and as it is preparing to launch its updated "full self-driving" software to more customers.

The U.S. auto safety agency said in March it has opened 27 investigations into crashes of Tesla vehicles; at least three of the crashes occurred recently.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in January that he expects huge profits from its full self-driving software, saying he is "highly confident the car will be able to drive itself with reliability in excess of human this year."

The self-driving technology must overcome safety and regulatory hurdles to achieve commercial success.

Umanzor said the two crash victims were born in 1962 and 1951.

lol. media would call a drive by shooting from a tesla a tesla deatg
Another wreckless article. How would Autopilot be engaged with drivers not in the front seat? Either it wasnt on Autopilot, or was negliently being used. RIP, but this is ridiculous.
That rim can still go on ebay.

humans are better than machines. double LL, my smart phone can't even spell check correctly. I'm not relying on that much tech. I'd end up like a duck raised by a chicken, losing thousands of years of evolutionary skills.
you're wrong. if all cars were teslas and driverless right now there'd be many less deaths. if you're a really good driver you might be better than current self driving systems, but the majority of people will let their attention or judgement slide somewhen, resulting in many deadly accidents. you just cant control your fate in a self driving car, that's the scary part.
Musk and Trump share excess confidence, megalomania, attention grabber behaviour, causing death by misleading the public and enjoying followership that makes them cult leaders
throw Bezos on that group also
no progress without pioneers, they get criticized, then adopted
 he is not *****anyone...
shut down this experiment. how many people will need to die. there is no way to make it safe.
How many human drivers get into deadly crashes every day?  Time to shut down that experiment too?
Ignorance is bliss
RIP to the passengers and sympathies to their loved ones. God knows why anyone would let a self-driving car operate without being behind the driver's wheel at all times
because Elon has convinced people it's full self driving and it's safe.. because he's the messiah of the cult of Tesla.. they blindly believe.. this was an avoidable accident.. this was gross negligence on the side of Tesla and specifically Elon.. pushing fantasy over reality.. reality is, system is nowhere near ready.. and the name itself is misleading..
more like he caused his own death. ai doesn't have a driver license, under law the person driving needs a license to operate a vehicle. tesla can provide some sort of helping feature but ultimately a person is needed in the driver seat operating with or without a helping feature.
Wrong, wrong and wrong! Tesla is at level 3 autonomy right now and that does not mean that you don't have to pay attention. It's the exact opposite!!! You have to be attentive and ready to take command at any time. If you didn't know this and were fooling around at high speeds then you were extremely ignorant. I'm glad they didn't ***anyone else on the road.
