Initial Jobless Claims Fall to Post-Pandemic Low as Recovery Gains Strength

Investing.com -- The number of people making initial claims for jobless benefits fell last week to its lowest level since the pandemic erupted a year ago, signaling that the reopening of the U.S. economy is damping the pace of layoffs around the country.

The Labor Department said that 712,000 initial jobless claims were filed last week, down from 754,000 the week before and a bigger drop than expected. The consensus forecast ahead of time had been 725,000.

Continuing claims, which are reported with a one-week lag to initial claims, also fell by more than expected to 4.144 million, a drop of almost 200,000 from the previous week.

The Labor Department's figures weren't all rosy, however. The broadest measure of people claiming unemployment-related benefits rose by nearly 2 million to top 20 million again, thanks to rises of 1 million each in claimants under two pandemic-related schemes, known as Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation. Those programs cater to the self-employed (notably to gig workers) and the long-term unemployed.

Almost all of that increase was accounted for by the state of California, suggesting that the state may have undercounted its claimants in past weeks.

The data come against the backdrop of a U.S. economy that is slowly starting to eat away at the vast amount of slack in the labor market. The economy added nearly 400,000 jobs last month, with more than that number created in the services sector, where restaurants and non-essential stores were among the biggest hirers.

Even if you believe the official numbers (which I highly doubt) it is still WAY TOO HIGH, yet the stock market is on steam ignoring the suffering of main-street people.
Pandemic is over. Countries should open borders for travel.
yeah full steam ahead!
I give this credit to the former administration,; et's see what it looks like in 3 years.
I assume you gave Obama credit for the 4% unemployment rate and the market for the first year under Trump....yeah, I didn't think so.
good news. hopefully in time we can return to normal.
Unemployment will not change till October, people no rush to go back to work if you still giving them a gift every week.
Can you imagine how the market would have reacted to this same information in 2009? No doubt this is a different scenario but a year into this whole thing and we're still talking about nearly three quarters of a million people applying for UI benefits on a weekly basis. This overreaction to COVID was a substantially greater disaster than the disease itself. And here we are talking about how much better things are now. Whatever ******drugs these officials are using, I'd like to get in on it because man...it makes reality soooo much more palatable.
So you believe 500k people dead is insignificant? So you believe that all the deaths in WWI, WWII, the Vietnam and Iraq wars, since they total less then Covid deaths are also insignificant. The delusion you sell yourself is harming our great nation. How can you not care for your fellow countrymen? How can we be strong when we are divided?
FFS...the VAST MAJORITY of the deaths were going to take place within 5 years time anyhow because they were old/frail. They also had comorbidities such as obesity and heart disease. And last but not least, deaths from influenza have vanished. Only COVID exists now. When was the last time you heard someone died of the flu? It's a miracle that influenza was eradicated over the last year. In other words, that 500k number that you're quoting has a TON of garbage data in it. It is not clear cut that those individuals died BECAUSE of COVID.
Your words show the kind of heart you have. I wonder if you think that way when your relatives get sick? The reason we dont see influenza this year has nothing to do with the conspiracies you believe in but is directly related to the msssive behavioral shifts of the past year: social distancing, working from home, school, business and restaurant closures, mask wearing, and greater flu vaccinations. And try to think outside the borders of your country and recognize that this occured all over the world. Just because you cant understand something doesnt make it a conspiracy.
The media is evil and manipulative and people know it
More fabricated data by the government to suit their agenda

It's insane how everyone and every entity changed their tune once biden was in office. everything setup so it appears he's doing better with covid
so then the numbers are dropping because theyre not testing illegals??
Stop drinking so much soy, because you crapped your diapers again.
Wow, lay off the kool-aid. Trump was the worst president the US has ever had.
I thought it was 1000 short of the low.
Biden will put an end to that!
