Ripple Effect: Ashton Kutcher Donates $4 million Worth of XRP to Ellen DeGeneres

In a move of stunning generosity, the cause of Ellen DeGeneres, saving African gorillas, received $4 million’s worth of Ripple (XRP). The transaction happened live and in an instant, through a smartphone.

Ashton Kutcher shared the exciting news, after outlining his involvement with the Ripple project through his tech investment fund. He presented Ripple as a new system for sending value anywhere in the world.

“Usually people come out with the big giant check and do the big giant check thing, but we can actually transfer into Rwandan Francs right now right here and all we have to do is push this button that’s in your account,” said Kutcher.

But the news were not met with entirely positive reviews in the crypto sphere. Some were offended and called the event “shilling”. Criticisms against Ripple recalled that it is not, in fact, a classical crypto coin.

As for the market price, $4 million’s worth of XRP may not cost that much anymore, not after the latest market downturn. XRP trades at $0.61, down more than 12% in a week. The asset has quickly depreciated after the wave of hype at the end of last year. And there is no telling if XRP manages to revisit peak levels, or continues to sink with the rest of the markets.

As for the Ellen Show, moving $4 million’s worth of XRP may certainly affect the market. The price of XRP is highly dependent on Korean exchanges,

The way Ripple was presented on the Ellen Show, however, suggested it was a startup only tangentially related to crypto coins. Also, Ashton Kutcher was not very clear he was sending XRP coins, and not actual dollars. The news hardly had an effect on XRP prices, despite the high-level publicity. And in fact, for a lay audience not acquainted with crypto coins, it may be very difficult to buy and hold XRP in a wallet, without significant preparation.

The Ripple company also has a large fund for direct donations to banks, organizations, and anyone who wants to test the XRP system. The funds of 55 billion XRP were locked, and will be released in monthly increments, to donate or sell on the open markets.
