Vaccinated US nurse contracts COVID-19, expert says Pfizer shot needed more time to work - ABC

(Reuters) - A nurse in California tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE)'s vaccine, an ABC News affiliate reported https:// on Tuesday, but a medical expert said the body needs more time to build up protection.

Matthew W., 45, a nurse at two different local hospitals, said in a Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) post on December 18 that he had received the Pfizer vaccine, telling the ABC News affiliate that his arm was sore for a day but that he had suffered no other side-effects.

Six days later on Christmas Eve, he became sick after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit, the report added. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.

He went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19 the day after Christmas, the report said.

Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego, told the ABC News affiliate that this scenario was not unexpected.

"We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it's going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," Ramers said.

"That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," Ramers added.

Cpuld have caught it before vaccination. This thing can go 3 plus weeks before symptoms show up especially in middle-aged healthcare professionals who already have a baseline immunity to many diseases via exposure to those antigens over their career timeframe. In addition this darn virus may have already undergone even a slight mutation due to being in the US for almost a year and thereby may have increased virulence.
Sooooo is the media going to report on EVERY vacination failure or should we just assume a less tgan 1% failure rate - which is conservate - and be done with it.

This is insane...why didn't Pfizer warned ppl that even after vaccine they need time of 10/14 odd days to work it effectively...
They did in an inadvertent way by saying you need 2 doses. So one would assume they are not fully vaccinated until they get the second dose and even then should try to keep to protocol for some time after as a precaution. Immunity needs to be built first. People keep assuming all of this *******will make them invincible against the virus and it doesn't. Same thing with masks. As soon as people got them they stopped staying 6 feet away from people which is still protocol. If people want to assume they are cured then thats on them. medicine is not so black and white. Most vaccinations take time to work in the body so its assumed if others take time, this will too. Besides that, if people can't even follow something as simple as mask wearing, then I doubt they will follow what Pfizer says either. Its unfortunate this nurse got sick with Covid, hopefully this information will be broadcasted wide enough so everyone can see the information.

it should be reporting pfizer own ceo said they are uncertain if the vaccine stops transmission at all. Not this ******* Transmission was never an endpoint or studied on these vaccines. So you basically got a therapeutic drug to help with symptoms and not something to stop the virus.
