Investment Strategy

The investment seeks long-term capital appreciation. Under normal circumstances, the fund seeks to achieve its investment objective by investing at least 80% of its net assets, which include borrowings for investment purposes, in the common and preferred stocks of small companies located in emerging market countries. Emerging market countries generally include every country in the world except the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and most of the countries in Western Europe.

Biography Alex Zarechnak is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews Asia and co‑manages the firm’s Emerging Markets Equity Strategy. Prior to joining the firm in 2020, he spent a total of 15 years (1998 – 2006 and 2012 – 2019) at Wellington Management as an analyst for the firm’s flagship Emerging Markets Equity Fund as a generalist first covering CEEMEA, then Latin America. From 2006-2012, he was a regional equity analyst at Capital Group, covering Emerging Markets with a focus on energy, telecoms and consumer sectors in Latin America and CEEMEA. Biography Jeremy Sutch, CFA, is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews and co-manages the firm’s Emerging Markets Equity, Emerging Markets ex China, Emerging Markets Small Companies, and Pacific Tiger Strategies. Prior to joining the firm in 2015, he was Director and Global Head of Emerging Companies at Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong from 2012 to 2015, responsible for the fundamental analysis of companies in Asia, with a particular focus on small- and mid-capitalization companies. From 2009 to 2012, he was Managing Director at MJP Capital in Hong Kong, which he co-founded. His prior experience has included managing small-cap equities at Indus Capital Advisors and serving as Head of Hong Kong Research for ABN AMRO Asia Securities. Jeremy earned an M.A. in French and History from the University of Edinburgh. Jeremy has been a Portfolio Manager of the Matthews Emerging Markets Small Companies Fund since 2021, and of the Matthews Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Matthews Emerging Markets Equity Active ETF, Matthews Emerging Markets ex China Active ETF, Matthews Pacific Tiger Fund and Matthews Pacific Tiger Active ETF since 2023.

Biography Vivek Tanneeru is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews Asia and manages the firm's Asia ESG and Asia Small Companies Strategies. Prior to joining Matthews Asia in 2011, Vivek was an Investment Manager on the Global Emerging Markets team of Pictet Asset Management in London. While at Pictet, he also worked on the firm's Global Equities team, managing Japan and Asia ex-Japan markets. Before earning his MBA from the London Business School in 2006, Vivek was a Business Systems Officer at The World Bank and served as a Consultant at Arthur Andersen Business Consulting and Citicorp Infotech Industries. He interned at Generation Investment Management while studying for his MBA Vivek received his Master's in Finance from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science in India. He is fluent in Hindi and Telugu. Vivek has been a Portfolio Manager of the Matthews Asia ESG Fund since its inception in 2015 and of the Asia Small Companies Fund since 2020.

Biography Robert Harvey is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews and manages the firm’s Emerging Asia Strategy. Prior to joining Matthews in 2012, he was a Senior Portfolio Manager at PXP Vietnam Asset Management from 2009 to 2012, where he focused on Vietnamese equities. Previously, he was a Portfolio Manager on the Global Emerging Markets team at F&C Asset Management in London from 2003 to 2009. Robert started his investment career in 1994 as an Assistant Equity Portfolio Manager with the Standard Bank of South Africa’s asset management division. Robert received a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy and Commercial Law from Rhodes University in South Africa and a Bachelor of Accounting Science in Advanced Management Accounting, Taxation and Auditing at the University of South Africa. Robert has been a Portfolio Manager of the Matthews Emerging Asia Fund since its inception in 2013.

Biography Tiffany Hsiao is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews. She manages the firm’s China Small Companies and Asia Small Companies Strategies and co-manages the Asia Innovators Strategy. Prior to joining the firm in 2014, she was a Vice President and Research Analyst at Goldman Sachs Investment Partners in Hong Kong and Tokyo from 2007 to 2013. She was responsible for researching Asia Pacific investments, with an emphasis on equities in China. Previously, she spent six years at Franklin Templeton Investments, where she managed the firm’s global communications fund. Tiffany earned her Master of Science and Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University and received a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. She is fluent in Mandarin and Taiwanese, and conversational in Cantonese. Tiffany has been a Portfolio Manager of the Matthews China Small Companies Fund since 2015, of the Matthews Asia Small Companies Fund since 2018 and of the Matthews Asia Innovators Fund since 2018

Biography Beini Zhou, CFA, is a co-portfolio manager for the Artisan International Small Cap Value Strategy. In this role, he oversees the research process and conducts fundamental research as a generalist. Prior to returning to Artisan Partners in September 2020, Mr. Zhou was a portfolio manager at Matthews Asia where he managed the Emerging Markets Equity and Asia Value Strategies and co-managed the Asia Small Companies Strategy. Before that, Mr. Zhou was an analyst for the Artisan International Value and Global Value strategies from 2005 to 2012.

Biography Ms. So is a Portfolio Manager for the Rondure New World Fund and the Rondure Overseas Fund at Rondure Global Advisors. Her primary focus is developing markets and her secondary focus is international developed markets. Prior to joining Rondure in 2020, Ms. So spent 15 years at Matthews Asia initially as research analyst covering Asia ex Japan equities. Ms. So was the founding Lead Portfolio Manager for the Matthews Asia Small Companies Fund (MSMLX) from its inception in 2008 through 2020. She was co-Portfolio Manager for the Matthews Asia Science & Technology Fund (MATFX; now known as Matthews Asia Innovators Fund) from 2008-2017, and co-Portfolio Manager for the Matthews China Small Companies Fund (MCSMX) from 2019 – 2020. Ms. So started her career in the investment industry in 1999 at Kochis Fitz Wealth Management in San Francisco. In 2001 she joined Dresdner RCM Global Investors as a portfolio associate working on US large cap equity strategies. Ms. So graduated from University of California, Davis, earning a BA in Economics. She is a CFA charter holder. Lydia is fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin. Lydia enjoys traveling, fishing, and hiking.

Biography Kenichi Amaki is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC. Prior to joining Matthews in 2008 as a Research Analyst, he was an investment officer for a family trust based in Monaco, researching investment opportunities primarily in Japan. From 2001 to 2004, he worked on the International Pension Fund Team at Nomura Asset Management in Tokyo, Japan. Kenichi received a B.A. in Law from Keio University in Japan and an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and is fluent in Japanese.

Prior to joining the firm in 2007 as a Senior Research Analyst, he was an Analyst at Luxor Capital Group, researching investment opportunities in Asian markets. From 2002 to 2005, he was an Investment Manager at Crystal Investment Group, a private equity firm in Seoul. Michael started his career as a Consultant in the Seoul office of KPMG. Biography Kamruddin is a Portfolio Manager at Matthews. Prior to joining Matthews in May 2008, she spent four years at Wasatch Advisors, first as a Senior Analyst and then as a Portfolio Manager. From 2002 to 2004, Noor was an Equities Analyst with Firsthand Capital Management. She began her career as a software design engineer, and has also worked at Merrill Lynch and CIBC World Markets.
