Ypsomed looking to use OpenSense
Ypsomed Holding AG (VX:YPSN), a Swiss medical autoinjectables producer, has announced that it has established a co-operation with Thin Film Electronics ASA (OL:THIN) to incorporate OpenSense into its autoinjector product YpsoMate “Smart”. Using NFC technology, users will be able to access operating instructions via their smartphones and send confirmation to their doctor that an injection has been correctly administered. Ypsomed is also considering how to add similar technology to its UnoPen injection pens. This news comes only a few weeks after Thinfilm announced that Diageo (L:DGE) has awarded it a five-digit unit order for its OpenSense labels. This will be used in a pilot trial of its Johnnie Walker whisky brand which, if successful, could lead to significant orders in 2016.
Importantly, in our view, this news shows the value of OpenSense’s marketing/ informational functionality in its own right and therefore the technology’s potential to be adopted across a wide range of industries. To date the market has tended to focus on OpenSense’s applications in the drinks industry where its anti-counterfeiting properties are paramount. Widening this scope is likely to lead to an increase in market expectations and therefore the value of the brand.
