Regional elections will be held in Galicia and the Basque country on Sunday. The most recent surveys show the Basque Nationalist Party (BNP) as the winner. It remains to be seen whether the BNP will have to forge an alliance with the Socialist Party to form a new regional government.
In Galicia, Mr. Rajoy’s Popular Party is expected to win the elections easily. A Popular Party victory could be the “go ahead” that the government has been waiting for before requesting aid from the Troika. This assistance will probably take the form of a credit line with the ESM.
The next major electoral battle on the European agenda will be municipal elections in Finland on 28 October. On this occasion, the Angry Birds named after the video game, in which birds swoop down on “PIGS” (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) that have stolen their eggs could vote massively for the True Finns party, adding to its already high score of 19.5% during recent legislative elections. Openly opposed to the Greek and Spanish rescue plans, Timo Soini, the party’s leader, now prefers for Finland to exit the eurozone...
