American Public Education, Inc. (NASDAQ:APEI) just released its first quarter fiscal 2016 earnings results, posting earnings per share of $0.64 per share and revenue of $84 million.

1. Beat earnings estimates. The company posted earnings of $0.64 per share, outpacing our Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.45 per share.

2. Beat revenue estimates. The company saw revenue figures of $84 million, topping our consensus estimate of $82 million but falling 1.6% year-over-year

3. Reported that active student enrollment at American Public University System decreased 12% year-over-year to 98,400 students as of March 31, 2016.

4. Anticipates Q2 consolidated revenues to decrease between approx. 7% and 4% year-over-year and consolidated net income of between $0.36-$0.41 per diluted share.

5. APEI was down a slight $0.01, or 0.04%, to $23.79 as of 5:02 PM ET in after-hours trading shortly after its earnings report was released.
