Investing.com -- Beer sales have been barred around World Cup stadiums in Qatar, according to an official release from FIFA on Friday.

The Gulf country has heavy controls over alcohol sales. But it had originally permitted major World Cup sponsor Budweiser to sell its beverages around the venues where matches for world soccer's showpiece tournament are set to take place.

However, it has changed the policy with only two days to go before the first game kicks off, restricting the sale of alcohol to a designated fan area in Doha.

FIFA said the decision was taken after discussions with Qatari authorities. Soccer's governing body added that Bud Zero, Budweiser's non-alcoholic lager, will still be available at all of Qatar's World Cup stadiums.

"Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans," FIFA said in a statement.

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA NV (EBR:ABI), the parent company of Budweiser, did not respond to a request for comment.

For the first time since 1986 I am not going to follow a World Cup. It’s my favorite sporting event but this time they killed it for me.
I'd much rater be in a fan zone in the England or wherever your watching from than be in qatar, fifa has sold football and the fans short with this world cup an utter disgrace just to line the pockets of the few at the top. as have the Qatari government let their own people down spending 200 billion to host a football tournament and *****many foreign workers on their way.
just drink coca cola till all drunk..
deceitful to the core - many fans would not have gone if they knew beer was not going to be part of turning up to matches- they'd have been better of saving their money and watching it from home, where they can smoke and drink to their hearts content - instead, they get everyone over there at great cost and then change their rules on drinking - utterly shameless - let's have a minute's silence for the hundreds of foreign workers that died building the stadia for these dreadful people.
FIFA IS word dirtiest organization
Qatar should also ban abusing foreign workers
Truth.
