(Reuters) - PepsiCo Inc (O:PEP) said on Wednesday it will change the name and brand image of its Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup, dropping a mascot that has been criticized for a racist history, amid a national debate over racial inequality in the United States.

The logo of the more than 130-year-old brand features an African-American woman named after a character from 19th-century minstrel shows. The offensive caricature is rooted in a stereotype of a friendly black woman working as a servant or nanny for a white family.

Following PepsiCo's move, ConAgra Brands Inc (N:CAG) announced a full review of its Mrs. Butterworth's syrup, whose package is meant to evoke a "loving grandmother." Rice brand Uncle Ben's said it was also considering updating its brand, which features a white-haired African-American man named after a Texas rice farmer.

The moves are part of Corporate America's reckoning with the treatment of African Americans amid weeks of protests over racism and police brutality after the death of George Floyd, a black man, in police custody in Minneapolis.

Aunt Jemima had been called out in recent days on social media. A TikTok video called "How To Make A Non Racist Breakfast" by user @singkirbysing, in which a woman pours the pancake mix down the sink, got over 109,000 views on Instagram since Tuesday when it was posted.

"We recognize Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype," Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of PepsiCo-owned Quaker Foods North America, said in a statement.

Quaker did not announce a brand name or logo, but said packages without the Aunt Jemima image would appear in the fourth quarter of this year.

ConAgra said its packaging could be interpreted "in a way that is wholly inconsistent with our values" and that it has "begun a complete brand and packaging review on Mrs. Butterworth's".

Mars said it had "a responsibility to take a stand in helping to put an end to racial bias and injustices" and that "one way we can do this is by evolving the Uncle Ben’s brand, including its visual brand identity."

"We don’t yet know what the exact changes or timing will be, but we are evaluating all possibilities," a spokeswoman said in a statement.

Some observers lauded the moves, but said they were slow to come.

"Brands built on racist imagery have been living on borrowed time," said James O’Rourke, management professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. "This move by Quaker Oats, while welcome, is decades late in coming."

PepsiCo on Tuesday announced a set of initiatives worth more than $400 million over five years to support black communities and boost black representation at PepsiCo.

Thank you PepsiCo for listening and hearing. It's time for change.

why
Bad move Pepsi, will no longer buy.
why
If aunt Jemima is being replaced, can we also replace Demon Pelosi, the Keebler Elf Nadler, and the most wicked witch of them all, Schummer?
How is this racist, Aunt Jemima was looked up to as one of the all time best cooks, if she was a slave or not that is history. The few want to discredit people of great honor, MANY GREAT PEOPLE were slaves and it will be removed from history and she will never be remembered now by my children. NO matter  good  or bad history needs to be known!
I read somewhere that they want to make a push for kid friendly labels and so will be replacing human mascots with animals. They will be getting rid of Aunt Jemima and replacing her with a monkey.
do away with BLM. it's destroying our black youth and our black communities. more blacks have died due to BLM riots than due to racism.
please leave your racist country and let us respect our history and values.. we want freedom and respect as well as tolerance.. not censorship and the re-writing of history
You know nothing about American culture or history, German.
unreal.. i am going to boycott Pepsi.. no sense of history.. there is nothibg wrong with uncle ben or aunt jemima.. changing it is akin to giving in to the leftist agenda
How is the Uncle Benz image racist? Would it be less offensive to have an old white guy on their products?
I must have offended Rueters and the author of this article to have had my comments deleted. Stick with the premise of investment analysis. Rueters is very good at perpetuating social strife which seems to be their underlining objective.
I must be very ignorant. Not once in my life did I connect Aunt Jemima with racism. Just figured her to be a woman cooking breakfast for the family. Her image connected me to a delicious breakfast.
And Dr Donny’s kissy kissy DC folks say there is no systemic racism in this country. Obviously, they haven’t read 90% of the comments here. Disgusting! And Bill Barr is the worst of them all.
Do away with Cracker Jacks too while we're at it.
So what about Cracker Barrel?
hilarious. I'm sure racists are really upset that black faces are being purged from grocery store products. All Uncle Ben has ever wanted is to serve you some delicious rice you neanderthal commies
Let's be real here...a black servant serving a white family for a logo. Yeah..... that's a no-brainer
Gotta be honest... can't believe it took this long. And I'm not really on this PC "bandwagon" , but Aunt Jemima is about as racy as it gets
are we gonna burn the declaration of independence too cause Thomas Jefferson is the co-owner of the document. get a freaking life geez
this is why I hate investing in most companies today. i really need to comparmentalise a separate these bullS corporate woke culture from my $$$ returns....
This is the real problem, not the Fed or Trump or bubble stocks. When this lefty bunch takes over.....that is the end folks
I’ve just done a study....matched up the racist comments posted in response to this PepsiCo news story with other comments in support of Dr Donny in response to earlier news stories. By a HUGE 10 to 1 margin, most of today’s racist postings trace to Dr Donny supporters and “maga king” is by far the biggest offender. Now there’s something for which Dr Donny and Kissy Kissy Mike can be proud....
What a joke across the US!!!
I think we should push for changing  the image of  Quaker Oatmeal  and WHITE people---remember it being  pushed by White grandfathers and uncles ( in the 80-90's think Wilford Brimley saying right thing to do and tasty way to do it)   ---it is SOOO  racist to think that old white men eat only oatmeal when sometimes they  eat grits....white men  and oatmeal --->>>it is a stereotype !!! SHAME you pepsi
This is the same as the totalitarian purges of culture you see in history. No different. Censor everything you don't find offensive.
