EDF (EPA:EDF) Energy has awarded contracts to NYSE-listed Jacobs and Costain for the management of operations across eight UK nuclear power stations, including Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) stations and the Sizewell B pressurized water reactor. These stations are responsible for 16% of the UK's electricity generation.

The two-year contract with Jacobs, valued at over $53 million, will commence on January 1, 2024. The firm will work on four AGR stations, assist in transitioning three AGR stations from generation to defueling, and contribute to the life extension program of the Sizewell B pressurized water reactor. "We are committed to supporting EDF in maximizing sustainable, emission-free energy generation from these eight stations," said Karen Wiemelt, Jacobs' Senior Vice President. She further emphasized the role of Jacobs in reinforcing the UK's energy security and its net-zero carbon ambitions by 2050.

In tandem with this, Jacobs will also manage the defueling and decommissioning at stations that have ceased energy production.

Costain's role includes ensuring safe operation, decommissioning, and managing complex and interdependent programs in a highly regulated environment overseen by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. The company's £15M annual contract also features an extension option. Both Jacobs and Costain will provide specialist support to enhance project performance, aiding in achieving energy security, net-zero carbon by 2050, Nuclear Plant Life Extension, emission-free energy generation, and transition toward defueling.

These contracts highlight the strategic importance of nuclear power in the UK's energy mix and its commitment to achieving a net-zero carbon future.
