Investing.com — Cinema chain and well-known meme stock AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE:AMC) said Monday that attendance on Saturday, December 18, was its largest single-day attendance since Christmas Day 2019.
Helped by the opening weekend of Marvel & Sony (NYSE:SONY) Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home", AMC broke numerous post-reopening attendance records.
AMC shares rose over 3% in early Monday trading but quickly retraced and are now down 1.6%.
"Spider-Man" closed the weekend as the biggest December opening of all time, with AMC setting new post-reopening domestic attendance records on Thursday, breaking that record on Friday, and then again on Saturday. According to AMC, over 2 million people watched a movie at one of its theatres globally on Saturday, the most tickets sold in a single day since Christmas day, 2019.
Sunday also marked the first time AMC has sold at least 1 million tickets each day Thursday through Sunday since December 2019.
“Historically, December is one of the biggest months of the year for major blockbuster releases, so to see SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME set a new all-time opening weekend box office record this month is significant not just for AMC, but for the entire theatrical industry,” said Adam Aron, AMC chairman and CEO.
