Investing.com -- The pound was unchanged Monday after U.K. Prime Minister survived a vote of confidence in his leadership of the Conservative Party by 211 to 148.

GBP/USD was up 0.02% to $1.2532.

After securing about 59% of the total vote, Johnson is safe against a leadership challenge for another year.

Johnson called for unity from fellow Conservative lawmakers following the result.

"I'm grateful to colleagues for the support they've given me," Johnson said. "What we need to do now is to come together as a government and as a party."

The prime minister also ruled out a snap election, stressing that his focus would be on growing the economy and delivering better public services.

"I'm certainly not interested in snap elections," Johnson added. "We can focus on helping people with the cost of living, what we're doing to clear the COVID backlogs, what we're doing to make streets and communities safer."

The slender margin of Johnson's victory, however, demonstrates that there are many within the Conservative rank who are gunning for the prime minister's exit, dealing a blow to his authority.

This leaves the prime minister in a vulnerable position. Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May had survived a confidence vote in December 2018, by a larger margin of about 63%, but was soon forced out after a few months as Conservative, or 'Tory' lawmakers threatened to launch a new vote.

The vote arrived after at least 54 of Tory lawmakers submitted letters to initiate an emergency no-confidence vote in the prime minister's leadership.

Johnson has come under intense scrutiny after becoming the first British prime minister in history to have broken the law while in office. Earlier this year, Johnson was found guilty of breaking his own Covid-19 lockdown rules.

In recent local elections, Johnson's Conservative ceded political ground to Labour, the main opposition party. There are fears that the ruling Conservative government will face further setbacks in the coming local elections amid spiraling food and energy costs.

in 2 week there are 2 by-elections to replace 2 Tory MPs (both gone due to *******scandals), in every polls conducted so far the Conservatives are projected to lose big in both areas (one in Northern England and one in Southwest), so at this point Labour probably prefers Boris Johnson to stick around as their punching bag.......
a country that asks for its PM to resign citing double standards over nothing but wine parties has its priorities wrong & lost its path ahead
so it's OK for politicians to break the very laws they themselves created and expected everyone else to obey?
so you’re advocating for politians to follow their rules but every political leader you defend has broken theirs.. either you’re very confused or don’t read enough
Following what happened to Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May who even after a successful win of vote of confidence in December 2018, was soon forced out after a few months as Conservative, I would advise Johnson to thread conscious in his leadership approach even as he seeks for unity. Congrats!
Great!!
His hair looks like an animal's nest
I was curious when i read that he had broken the law while in office. Then i saw it was the covid lockdown rules he didnt follow lol. Really reaching for something! sounds like hes about to get the Trump treatment from the media. GL Johnson!
"Then i saw it was the covid lockdown rules he didnt follow lol."  -- you mean the rules he himself implemented and expected the general public to follow?
Johnson was the first head of state to meet Zelensky in Kiev, Told Macron to get stuffed over ceding Dohansk to Putin, and is heterosexual. Dreadful things for a British PM. Secundus nulli, as the second best military unit in the British armed forces claim for themselves. But we all know it’s The Regiment that’s best. Who dares, wins. Of course, we in the States managed to elect Neville Chamberlain, as President. It takes a very great 96 year old lady to hold you all together.
"Johnson was the first head of state to meet Zelensky in Kiev......and is heterosexual."  -- well he is heterosexual, so I guess that's good enough for you then?  setting the standard way up high aren't you?
doesn't really matter - in fact if we want this dreadful mafia of a government out, then keeping Johnson will almost certainly mean the Tories are wiped out at the next general election - so I really don't mind if they didn't get rid of him now - whilst they all fight amongst each other, they become ineffective in stealing from the tax payer
"whilst they all fight amongst each other, they become ineffective in stealing from the tax payer"  - I think you are under estimating them, surely they can do infighting and stealing at the same time, not to mention using Brexit to ****up Northern Ireland even more
