It depends on where front and back month VX futures are relative to each other. See, each day, the fund will cover a set number of Oct VX that it shorted 30 days prior, then go and short a set number of Nov futures contract. Sometimes they were selling 20 and covering 17 (3 points), other times they are covering 19 (1 point).

UVXY ... will show the greater disparity as that ETF bumps up the number of vx futures contracts in order to convey the additional leverage. That additional leverage, again depending on how much contango there is in the futures, is what can work against it.

I've got a pretty sound basic knowledge of how contango works with vx, but I'm not sure how to see what contracts svix is holding at any point. I'm going to research contago more, but where would I look for svix holdings, if there's even a place? I appreciate your insight.

... The etf sells short vx futures contract 30 days out. It does that every day. Then 30 days later, it is buying back that same contract. Where it gets its best performance is when contango has it selling 20 and covering 18 as opposed to selling 20 and covering 19. Losses when its selling 20 and covering 21.
