First OpenSense shipment milestone
Thinfilm (OL:THIN) has announced that it has started shipping NFC OpenSense tags to lead customers, following orders announced earlier this year. The company is shipping the tags to winemaker Ferngrove and autoinjectables specialist Ypsomed (VX:YPSN) for use on their bottles and medical devices, respectively.
NFC OpenSense are printed electronic labels aimed at preventing counterfeiting of packaged liquid products and providing CRM and compliance benefits to brand owners via NFC connectivity. The shipments are the first step in the incorporation of the labels into products.
We expect sales of NFC OpenSense to reach $4.1m next year, primarily on the back of demand from winemakers and spirits manufacturers, including Diageo (L:DGE), which is to start a pilot scheme of the product in Q116. Thinfilm’s current investments in de-bottlenecking its existing sheet-based production line should enable it to increase production capacity from 28m to 44m OpenSense equivalent units during Q116 and then a further 76-120m during the rest of 2016.
