General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) , a leading industrial goods manufacturer, recently announced that its Jenbacher gas engines and Monsal advanced anaerobic digestion system have been selected by M+W group for their latest project, the Surrey County Council’s new Eco Park. This waste treatment and biogas-to-energy facility Eco Park is being built in Shepperton, Surrey, England.
On completion, the Eco Park will process 40,000 tons of food waste per annum from households in Surrey. This project is supported by a waste infrastructure grant by the U.K. government. This facility will be located next to an existing community recycling center, a few miles away from London Heathrow Airport.
General Electric’s Monsal anaerobic digestion system will help convert food waste into biogas, which can be utilized in generating renewable electricity and heat. The biogas produced from this system will be used to fuel two of the company’s Jenbacher J416 biogas engines, configured to generate around 50% of the common limit for NOx (known as oxides of nitrogen), which in turn will provide up to 2.4 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The excess power produced after fulfilling the requirements of the Eco Park will be supplied to the national grid.
This facility is being built on behalf of the Surrey County Council. The Eco Park will not only supply renewable power to the local distribution network but also help to clear landfills by using anaerobic digestion. In addition, it will have a 55,000-tonne-per-year gasification facility with pre-treatment, a recyclables bulking facility and a new visitors’ center. The gasification system will process municipal waste into partially renewable combustible gas (known as syngas), which will help produce additional power.
Per GE Power’s President and CEO, Heiner Markhoff, the company is keen on assisting municipal solid waste operators improve energy efficiency, reduce their environmental footprint and meet regulatory compliance. Notably, more and more European countries are introducing landfill bans on food waste. This project displays how keen General Electric is on providing best-in-class solutions to its customers.
For this project, General Electric will provide its Monsal process technology, training and plant commissioning. General Electric’s authorized distributor of Jenbacher gas engines, Clarke Energy, will provide the two systems, which will be built at the company’s facility in Jenbach, Austria and at its Veresegyház, Hungary, site.
The company is committed to providing environment friendly solutions to its customers, as global warming and natural resource depletion issues gain prominence.
