On Financial Interdependence: Total Wealth Academy Founder Stephen Davis Empowers the Youth through Education

Stephen J. Davis empowers the younger generation to achieve financial freedom through proactive wealth-building strategies.

Author Stephen R. Covey introduced the concept of Maturity Continuum in his acclaimed book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The Maturity Continuum is a framework that outlines the progression from dependence to independence to interdependence. Dependence, the initial stage, refers to relying on others to fulfill one's needs. Everyone begins as entirely dependent beings, counting on parents and caregivers for sustenance, guidance, and validation.

Individuals gradually transition to independence as they grow, becoming self-reliant and practicing autonomy. They learn to make their own decisions in this phase. The last stage is interdependence, which combines the self-confidence and autonomy of independence with recognizing the power of teamwork and cooperation.

Stephen J. Davis, the founder and CEO of Total Wealth Academy, LLC, extends the concept of the Maturity Continuum to the financial world. Davis is a seasoned entrepreneur and financial mentor with extensive experience in wealth-building and passive income generation. Even while he was still in university, he recognized the gap that must be filled regarding the lack of education on wealth creation and financial independence. This realization motivated him to pave his path outside academia.

The forward-thinking man decided to become an entrepreneur and co-founded a hamburger delivery business. He later entered the corporate world, opening his eyes to the unfortunate reality that relying on a job for income would not position him for success. Davis sought alternative avenues to accumulate wealth at 27 and immersed himself in literature and resources on wealth-building.

Davis established Total Wealth Academy in 2020 with a mission to transform lives by empowering individuals to create a second stream of income to achieve a more balanced, joyful life. The financial mentor believes everyone deserves the opportunity to learn how to build wealth through real estate investments. The company fills the gap created by traditional educational systems that often neglect financial literacy by providing one-on-one coaching and consulting services.

Inspired by Covey's Maturity Continuum concept, Davis started to challenge the traditional understanding of independence in finance. The accomplished entrepreneur emphasizes that many mistakenly perceive having a job as independence when, in reality, it perpetuates dependence. "Employees still exchange time and effort for a paycheck. It's just like receiving an allowance for completing chores as a kid," Davis remarked.

The CEO, therefore, asserts that true independence lies in self-employment, where individuals have greater control over their income and time. Davis introduces the idea of interdependent income, which he equates with investment income. He believes acquiring a secondary revenue stream is critical for financial stability and eventual retirement.

Davis also advocates for changing the perspective that retirement links to age. "Anyone who has built a sustainable secondary income stream can achieve financial freedom and retire at any age," he shared. Given this, he emphasizes the importance of starting young when generating a second stream of revenue.

"The youth has the cognitive advantages and energy levels that are beneficial when it comes to building wealth. I talked to so many people in their 50s and 60s, regretting and wishing they had started investing in their financial future earlier. I believe that by teaching the value of interdependence and financial literacy in the younger generation, we can help them avoid such regrets," Davis added.

The real estate veteran highlights the significance of exemplifying honesty and transparency when discussing finances, especially with children. He believes in leading by example and imparting essential financial principles to them early on. After all, openly discussing the importance of building interdependent income and sharing personal experiences would empower children to make informed decisions about their financial futures.

"I told my kids to build a second income stream when they turned eight. I reminded them about it every year. My son graduated college with an interdependent income from his 11 rented houses. My daughter is the same, with an even larger second stream of income," he shared. Another instance that illustrates the CEO's commitment to empowering the younger generation is when he hired his personal assistant when she was only 19 years old, believing in nurturing talent and providing growth opportunities.

Stephen Davis remains dedicated to his advocacy of educating the youth about financial literacy, especially given that traditional career paths no longer guarantee stability. The Total Wealth Academy founder emphasizes the need to imbue the values of collaboration, resourcefulness, and strategic financial planning among the younger generation to achieve financial interdependence and fulfillment.
